NOTES FROM THE CHAIR

Happy New Year! I hope that each of you found some time to connect with friends and loved ones and that you were able to carve out a few moments of quiet reflection.

As I am sure many of you did, I spent quite a bit thinking about new year's resolutions. I realized that I always seem to make the same ones that roll over into the following year, but I never seem to "achieve" precisely what I resolve to do, so this year I set intentions. I intend to be more present, open to new experiences, and healthy.

AMG wants to help you with your intentions for 2023 and to be open to new opportunities for career development. We are working on a series of workshops to help you do that. You will find more information in the newsletter.

Let's help each other stay motivated and make 2023 a happy and productive one!

Patty Gonzalez Johnson
Chair, Administrative Management Group

AMG members, Quenesha, Grace, and Carla, Invite you to check out the #AMGoals limited series on LinkedIn as they share ideas, discuss challenges they encountered, and creative solutions they implemented to advance in their careers. Episodes will drop on Thursdays, and ICYMI, two episodes, are available and ready for you to watch. Future episodes will have special guests like your one and only, Patty Gonzalez-Johnson, AMG Chair! Don’t miss it! Connect with us, follow us, and share your thoughts.

The new year is a perfect time to embrace personal and professional advancement and development opportunities. Here are three tips you can do right now to prepare for future opportunities!

1. Stay informed about professional development opportunities
AMG will be offering a series of workshops to develop career skills. These sessions will include creating a resume and cover letter, branding yourself, and leveraging LinkedIn. Stay up to date by subscribing to our newsletter for information on these workshops!

2. Make learning a habit
Embrace the resources and opportunities UCLA offers to educate yourself in different skills. Make learning a habit, and schedule time for it daily. The habit of learning can also be applied to personal development. LinkedIn Learning, UCLA LMS, and UCLA Health Cornerstone have a lot of great resources, including courses such as “Coaching and Developing Employees,” “Coaching Skills for Leaders and Managers,” and “Executive Coaching.” Seek out podcasts, blogs, YouTube content, articles, and books that interest you. AMG just started a weekly mini-series, AMGoals, with a new topic launching every Thursday. Listen to our first topic, “Navigating Advancement Challenges,” on LinkedIn.

3. Expand your network
Establishing and expanding your network is crucial to finding new opportunities. Interacting with your networks can help you be in the loop regarding your future career, and it doesn’t have to be done in a traditional networking meeting setting. Consider joining campus groups, such as AMG, Staff Assembly, AGCA, APIFSA, La Comunidad, and InspirAsians, and participate in their programs, such as ProShare, to expand your network and meet new people. You can also join other professional groups, such as SRAI, RACC, and NASPA, or other informal groups that you can find on Facebook, LinkedIn, and other social networks.

ProShare 2023 Kicks Off!

The 2023 cycle of ProShare, a signature AMG initiative, has kicked off with a new cohort on Thursday, January 19, 2023. This six-month-long networking and support program assigns interested staff to small groups of UCLA professionals. These groups are uniquely suited to support one another with the challenges they face at their work. This year’s class was the largest in ProShare’s history! In 2023, over 75 participants from all around campus will take part in this exciting program. By attending meetings hosted by group-mates, participants gain exposure and perspective on areas of UCLA they may never have been aware of otherwise.

Moreover, starting this year, ProShare will include UCLA’s retiree community. The depth of experience and mentorship they will bring to the groups will undoubtedly be of great value. Find out what past participants are saying about ProShare here.

SAVE THE DATE!

In The Power of Habit, award-winning business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn. Organizational psychologist Adam Grant is an expert on opening other people's minds--and our own. As Wharton's top-rated professor and the bestselling author of Originals and Give and Take, he makes it one of his guiding principles to argue like he's right but listen like he's wrong. With bold ideas and rigorous evidence, he investigates how we can embrace the joy of being wrong, bring nuance to charged conversations, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners.
