The Dreamland team is ringing in the new year with some audacious plans and a fantastic new line-up of trip offerings to satisfy even the most daring of travelers. If you saw our last newsletter, you've heard the news: we're now offering bucket-list Grand Canyon backpacking trips! And that's not all - fromnight-time photography workshops to full-day hikes and half-day jaunts, we’re doing everything we can to create ideal combinations of novelty, challenge, and fun to delight hikers of every speed and caliber. There’s no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to backcountry wanderings, and we’ve got a little something for everyone in our updated tour opportunities.

Once April rolls around, we’ll be shifting into high gear here at Dreamland as the most coveted hiking season explodes into action. In fact, our popular overnight tours to White Pocket and Toroweap are already filling up as folks plan the highlights of their new year, and we can’t wait to host a whole new crew of explorers. The best parts of these excursions are not the “post-worthy” pics obtained, but rather the unexpected meetings of disparate minds… the candid conversations around early-morning camp stoves and hot coffee pots… the mutual realizations and connections and unlooked-for friendships that can bloom in the unlikeliest of places. This is what we love to create here at Dreamland, and this is what we live for: authentic experiences that transcend ads, posts, newsletters, and even travelogues to embrace the truest form of human adventure in the dust and on the trail.

Are you looking to explore Utah’s famous Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument? Have you fantasized about hiking across the mighty Grand Canyon? (Do you want to do it twice, back-to-back?) Or are you eager to forge a path even deeper into the Canyon’s backcountry? If exploration is in your blood but you’re just not quite sure how to get things started, we’ve got the perfect solution with an array of fully guided, multi-day, all-logistics-and-permits-provided adventures to delight your deepest imaginings. As one of our Dreamland guests and hiking aficionados, you’re in the know and have the edge: we haven’t yet released word of these new trips on social media, but we will do so soon… so beat the rush and join the adventure that’s calling your name. (Due to the complex logistics and long-term planning involved, space on these unique excursions is extremely limited, and even for trips that are still a year or more away, now is the ideal time to book your spot and start training for the challenge.)

In-Depth Photography Workshops. Speaking of epic adventures and challenges, we also have an array of opportunities to delight all the artists and photographers out there. Back by popular demand, celebrated photographer Cody York will be leading a number of Milky Way and sunrise/sunset photography workshops throughout the year, so bring your finest camera and lenses and head out to White Pocket in Vermilion Cliffs National Monument to soak in the unsurpassed beauty of red-rock wilderness beneath a dazzling night sky. We’ll provide all the camping equipment and meals, and our guides will take the group to the best locations for Cody to show you all the tips and tricks involved in capturing that perfect shot. And if you’d like to time your trip to encompass something truly unforgettable, aim for October! Cody’s 48-Hour White Pocket Milky Way Clinic will conclude just in time for you to add your own side trip and head a few hours north of Kanab to witness the rarest of celestial novelties: an annular solar eclipse. At the moment, there are still six spaces available on Cody’s October 11-13 workshop, and once all the eclipse-chasers get wind of what’s in store for Utah, it’ll be tough to find reservations anywhere in the area, so get your plans set early to guarantee the trip of a lifetime.

Dreamland’s “stomping grounds” cover a fair bit of southern Utah and northern Arizona, and while we love showing these amazing places to as many folks as possible, we actually do our best to avoid “stomping,” and so should every visitor to America’s backcountry. Treading carefully—in the most literal sense—is doubly important when it comes to delicate sandstone formations that chip and break more easily than glass. The slightest pressure is often more than enough to cause small pieces (or even whole chunks) of stone to come loose; ironically, the same fragility that has allowed wind and water to carve such fascinating sculptures is the same thing that can bring about their degradation and ultimately their downfall if we’re not careful to watch where we step.

What does all this mean in practical terms? Avoid stepping on delicate “ledges” that will break under your weight, and always be sure to cap your trekking poles with rubber tips to avoid poking divots in the stone. In the winter, any traction devices (spikes, etc) on hiking boots are a huge no-no, and for the very same reason: the inevitable chipping and scarring they inflict upon the stone. Our land is our truest treasure, and whether you’re on an official tour with us or hiking solo, it’s important to treat your surroundings with care and be conscientious stewards of these amazing lands.
