Israel’s Rejection and God’s Promise

“Inconceivable!” Throughout the movie, The Princess Bride, Sicilian boss Vizzini used this word a lot. Inigo Montoya, his Spanish cohort bent on revenge, finally responds to him by saying, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” I think he’s right! It's pretty obvious that Vizzini doesn't actually knows what it means. Yet, it suits him. It's funny, how he finds a lot of things “inconceivable,” but it turns out, they're not so inconceivable after all.

Unfortunately for him, he has to learn that the hard way as Westley outwits him and Vizzini is poisoned. If nothing else, Vizzini has offered pop culture, and society by extension, a single word to use in any inconceivable situation. A lot of things are inconceivable these days, aren't they?

In our study through Romans the apostle Paul makes a statement in Romans 9:6-7 “For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring.” Inconceivable! Yes? No!

In God’s master purpose behind the redemption of man which He established and set forth in motion even before the creation of the world a plan that would ultimately include the sending of His Son into the world through the descendants of Israel, Yet not all of Israel’s descendants would be a part of that plan.

While it may appear that Paul doesn’t know what he’s saying, the truth is, he is fully aware of the mystery behind that statement. I’d like for you to join us this Sunday as we continue to examine this wonderful book that introduces us to the wonderful grace and goodness of God.
