TACL Toastmasters

With holiday work parties and social events on the calendar, it might be time to brush up on your small talk skills. Encourage others to talk by asking open-ended questions that can’t be answered with just a “yes” or “no.”  Affirm their answer after listening to their response, comment positively on something you observe or have in common, and add to the conversation by extending the topic with your own experience or by pivoting to another related topic.

Here are the meeting highlights of this month.  On November 21, Don’s ice breaker encouraged audience to do 3 things to get out of depression.  Topic master Sunny asked our thoughts and actions before holidays.   On December 4th, Brian presented a speech to demonstrate vocal variety and body language and his speech was about challenges bringing opportunities.  Helen led us a table topic ‘Traveling’.  On December 12, Phil delivered a level 5 Ethical leadership speech and he talked about empower Ethical Frameworks to build a better world.   Kevin conducted table topic asking challenging ethical questions.   On December 18, we had Christmas holiday party, other than delicious lunch and treats, we had excellent programs, Joke-a-Thon generated lots of laughs, and Charades with smart kids’ participation sure made this game much more exciting!  We appreciated the youngsters brought so much joy to the event.

A Year-end Message from the Founding Director

Center for Taiwan Studies

University of California, San Diego

Dear All:

Happy Holidays!

At the end of the year 2022, we would like to express our deep appreciations of the donors (Chui-Shan and Rufina Chen; Bob and Jean Cheng; Hwalin Lee) for their generous gifts.  We should also acknowledge that we owe a lot to a transitional team who has worked meticulously and tirelessly from different locations over the last two years to help incorporate Taiwanese American Achieves into our Center website, on top of transferring related photo albums to the Geisel library’s digital resources: Jeff Chen, Judy Chen, Knight Chen, Xi Chen, Tony Hsieh, Ashley Lee, James Lee, and in particular, Susan Liu.  Together with several of our research assistants—Brandon, Jason, and Zach, they render UCSD a hub in Taiwan and Taiwanese American studies, in sharing not only important historical images, or Taiwanese American Who’s Who bio entries, but discussions on the changing status of China-Taiwan-US relationship, book talks, film showcase, and public events, among others, around Taiwan and Taiwanese America.
