Simplified Peer Review Framework
Proposed at NIH
Commentary Deadline: March 10, 2023
NIH invites public input on a revised framework for evaluating and scoring peer-review criteria for research-project grant (RPG) applications. The simplified framework will reorganize five major regulatory criteria under three scored categories, and reduce the number of non-score-driving review considerations that reviewers evaluate in judging the scientific merit of RPG applications.

MIRA-ESI FOA to be reissued with two annual deadlines
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) plans to issue an FOA in Spring 2023 for the Maximizing Investigators’ Research Award (MIRA) for Early Stage Investigators (ESI), which provides flexible support for a program of research that falls within the mission of NIGMS.
ESIs are encouraged to submit an application early in their independent careers and to move into research areas that are distinct from those of their postdoctoral mentors. Applicants who have not yet received independent research funding are encouraged to apply, as are those who have not had sufficient time and/or resources to generate independent senior author publications. Preliminary data are neither required nor expected.
The next application deadline is expected in October 2023.
