January is National Mentoring Month, and we think it's the perfect time to put yourself first. Take time to assess where you are in your career, where you’re headed and who can help you get there!

We encourage you to take full advantage of your CAMP mentoring connection as you make plans for a productive 2023. In order to make sure your mentoring relationships is prepared for what's to come, we offer these tips:

Be an initiator. Mentoring whether virtual or in-person has always required a level of intentionality and accountability to succeed. Together, mentor and mentee should be deciding what to focus on in their connection, so that both parties feel they are getting true value.

Meet your partner where they are. Mentoring relationships don't have to be all business. Check in with your partner and make sure you understand their needs and are providing that space and level of understanding. Revisit the cadence of your meetings, as well as the tools you're using.

Reassess your goals. The goals you had last January or February might look very different from the world you know now. Revisit why you engaged in mentoring in the first place. Adjust your milestones to meet your new normal.

We've updated our mentoring plans and added some new ones to provide your mentoring pairs with a 2023 refresh! Also, join us for one of our many free CLE events to learn and grow as a mentoring pair.

Together, you can help each other to create new plans and opportunities for the year ahead.

Know a People Pleaser?

People pleasers are often incapable of saying no, avoid making decisions for fear of conflict, put other people's feelings above their own, have a fear of letting others down, can't accept praise for a job well done, and/or neglect to ask for help when they need it.  These behaviors occur when we try to control how other people see us rather than focusing on how we feel about ourselves.  When we try to assume how others will respond to us, and we change our behavior to alter that response, we aren’t being authentic.  Some ways to change “people pleasing” behaviors include:  recognize that your time and energy are as valuable as anyone else's, realize that you can't control what someone else is feeling, focus on controlling how you feel, and learn to listen to your own gut instinct.  If you've been catering to others, you may have lost touch with your own beliefs or feelings, but you can change that pattern any time!

Your Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program can help.
