Message from the Director
ACW Members Make Beautiful Music Together
by Barbara Bridges, ACW Director

When I was watching ACW members Dave Devorak and Marko Fields play with their bands the other night, Hittites and Zoe Says Go, respectively, it struck me how the symbiotic practice of playing music together is kind of the quintessential example of how positive and powerful the feeling of community and collaboration can be. I asked Dave how he feels when the musicians all synch together just right and that last note is fading away.
I feel that when my bandmates and I play together, the individual “I's”  transforms into “We/Us” and each of our respective abilities merge into something magical—a transcendent state of creating and performing that none of us could ever reach on our own.
The old cliché’ – They make beautiful music together – is trying to describe that idea, I think.  I realized that ACW is trying to accomplish that same kind of creative collaboration as we all come together with our various talents.

It is my job to make sure every ACW member finds their “instrument” so they can all experience what a musician experiences - as that last “note” fades away.

Congratulations to the ACW “band”.  We paid ACW artists over $107, 000.00 in the last two years.

Welcome New ACW Board Member
Amáda Márquez Simula (She/Her) is a Chicana (Mexican-American) woman who appreciates and shares artwork from her Mexican roots. She is also the second Latina Mayor in Minnesota and proudly bonds with people in her community through relationship-building while exploring our unique cultures.

An artist who expresses herself in multiple ways; using textiles through cosplay and quilting, painting to transform antique and vintage mirrors into Dia de Los Muertos vignettes to reflect on present, past, and future, gardening to feed all the senses, and music to reach a deeper part of our soul. You’ll find Amáda’s work (both art and public service) on
 Instagram

Thank you for the opportunity to join your ACW Board. I look forward to meeting and working with you. As Mayor,  I believe public art is good for the community. Art helps us connect with the community and each other. Art brings meaning to us in expected and unexpected ways. Having art in public and private spaces is good for our emotional quotient. I look forward to sharing my background and community’s input to the ACW Board meetings. Thank you.

Can an artist survive on getting 50% of their gallery sales? Can a gallery survive if they don’t take 50%? What percentage is fair?
Some galleries will charge a fee to be in the gallery and not take a percentage of sales. Some galleries will do the opposite. And some will take both.
Layl McDill has had a 30-year career in selling work through galleries and says she has seen “numerous galleries and consignment shops fail that don’t take commissions of 40 or 50%. If they start by taking 25% to 35% the gallery owners soon find this isn’t enough to survive and has to raise up their commission to stay in business.”
Layl also believes, “it is most professional to charge the same prices in all the venues you sell your work even if it is in person. You have spent time and money to sell your work so you deserve to charge the same rate that galleries charge.”

According to theartnewspaper.com, One-third of all galleries operate in the red. The gallery model needs to change to accommodate the gallery and the artist. It’s going to take innovators. Are you one of them?

Climate Change Action Group Forming
For those who feel that individual footprint-minimizing actions aren’t enough to keep the world from burning up and clean water from disappearing, Art to Change the World offers an affinity group directed at figuring out how art can be employed in manageable larger-scale actions.  Corporate interests, individual investments, political will, environmental justice - let’s consolidate our knowledge, help each other progress in our climate action awareness, and land on a fund-able project or projects.

I hope you can join me in lifting up the voices of youth in the upcoming performance of the play I wrote. We have a cast of amazing youth performers. The play is based on real-life experiences I had working with Twin Cities youth over the past two years.
Inspired by Claudette and Rosa
Sonia and some of her classmates struggle navigating issues of race in their everyday life. After learning about Civil Rights Activists Rosa Parks and Claudette Colvin, Sonia is inspired to take a stand in her own life and move them to action. In 1955, nine months before Rosa Parks became known as a civil rights icon, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin refused to give up her seat on a racially segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama. Claudette’s story of resistance and her relationship with Rosa reveals the role she played in sparking a movement for racial justice.
The show runs February10-February 26, 2023. More info and tickets available at

Join the Web Re-Org Committee in January.
(So far: Apollo -chair, Collin, Barbara, Frances, Kelly, Barbara, Layl, Rebecca D) We need $10,000.  We have $3,000.  The committee will create a site map.  The ACW website functions as a historical archive, a document resource for ACW involvement, and most importantly, a
site where events and projects are planned, advertised, and managed. Commitment will be one or two 2-hour meetings. Post info@arttochangetheworld.org to raise your voice.

Project Manager Training – the Next Step in ACW’s Evolution.
Call for Committee Members to help develop a training program for Project Managers in January on Zoom.

Being an effective project manager is a learned skill. There are two components:
1. Organizational strategies - Easy to teach.
2. People management strategies - Hard to teach.

Be part of expanding the reach of ACW and help design the Project Manager Training program.

JANUARY HOMEWOOD GALLERY SHOW
BILL COTTMAN: I Am Here
Curated by Seitu Jones, George Slade, Davu Seru, Miko Simmons & Beverly Cottman
January 6 through 31.  Opening Reception: Friday, January 6th from 5 pm to 8 pm
Homewood Studios, 2400 Plymouth Avenue

KFAI-FM Remote Broadcast from the Galley: Saturday, January 7 from 9 am to 11 am
In-person &/or call-in memories and stories about Bill hosted by Kenna Cottman (Bill’s daughter) and Yonci Peaceful Jameson (Bill’s granddaughter)
Gallery Talk with curators: Tuesday, January 17. beginning at 7 pm (How this show came together; what we were trying to do.  )
The passing, all too soon, of Bill Cottman, one of our community’s most active, connected, and important artists, a little more than a year ago, has left us all pulsing with memories and believing he is still with us in so many ways.  Thus, our gallery show to remember him as a photographer, video artist, writer, poet, and bookmaker.
To do his lifetime of work justice, we would have to hire a huge hall.  Instead, we have at Beverly Cottman’s suggestion, invited four artist friends of Bill and Beverly to curate a show touching on several aspects of Bill’s artistic life.  The show includes many of his photographs and photo series, (of course), video work, his various published books, and ephemera collected by the curators.  Like all of Bill’s shows in our gallery over the past twenty years, it will be unpredictable, surprising, informative, revelatory, and professionally superb.
In addition, anyone with a good Bill Cottman story or memory is invited to attend our gallery in person or call in during the Mostly Jazz program on KFAI-FM, Saturday, January 7th from 9 am to 11 am.
