Dear Bonjour Paris readers,
To the west of Paris, just about 20 minutes by RER train from Charles-de-Gaulle-Etoile station, the town of Saint-Germain-en-Laye is home to the National Museum of Archeology. The setting itself is magnificent: the Renaissance style chateau was where Louis XIV was born, and its terrace, designed by landscape architect André Le Nôtre, offers sweeping views over the Seine with the skyscrapers of La Défense rising in the distance. It’s here where we had an encounter with Clovis last weekend. More than an encounter, I should say. With the exhibit “The World of Clovis,” the museum has created a “choose-your-own adventure,” kid-friendly experience where “you are the hero,” playing a character from the Merovingian period and immersing yourself in the early Middle Ages. It made for a fun outing, complete with an interactive app and precious sixth-century artifacts, on a particularly cold January day. Keen to learn more about the ancient king? Check out the fascinating article by Marian Jones below.
