Survey: We need your help to understand the learning needs of humanitarian health workers

PallCHASE has recently launched a survey to explore the learning needs of humanitarian health workers. If you have worked in a humanitarian setting we need you to fill this survey!

Please also share this survey with any colleagues who are working or have worked in the past in humanitarian settings.

This study will help us to understand the experiences and views of humanitarian health workers, and how we can develop palliative care learning activities to support them in the future.

Please click on the link below to find out more about the study and participate.

Please forward this email or the link to any colleagues or contacts who are working in humanitarian settings.

New e-learning course on Children's Palliative care in Humanitarian Setting Launches!

In partnership with the International Children’s Palliative Care Network (ICPCN), we recently launched an e-learning course on Children’s Palliative Care in Humanitarian Settings. This new program aims to bridge the knowledge and skills gap amongst clinicians in providing pediatric palliative care in humanitarian situations. The curriculum comprises a series of four modules accompanied by realistic clinical cases and is currently available in English (more languages to come). Learn more or complete the course on the ICPCN e-learning site: www.elearnicpcn.org

Webinar on Palliative Care in Humanitarian Settings - Trauma Informed Care

Recently, PallCHASE hosted a webinar, on Palliative Care in Humanitarian Settings, focusing on War and Conflict - Trauma Informed Care. In the webinar, Dr. Yasser Abu Jamei described his work with Gaza's Community Mental Health Services which involves providing psychological support for caregivers and healthcare professionals. He described the challenges of high levels of anxiety due to a lack of safety and security, noting that "you cannot help others if you are feeling paralyzed or overwhelmed yourself".

Father Rick Bauer then spoke about the importance of spiritual care, emphasizing that "suffering is not a question that demands an answer, it is a mystery which demands a presence". Fr Rick highlighted that spiritual care can involve faith support as well as spiritual issues such as one's meaning, purpose and connection to life.

“Helping, fixing, and serving represent three different ways of seeing life. When you help, you see life as weak. When you fix, you see life as broken. When you serve, you see life as whole. Fixing and helping may be the work of the ego, and service is the work of the soul.”  Anne Kelemen, PC Provider USA

Hope for the Future of Palliative Care in Gaza

Every person has the right to pain relief and to die with dignity. Right? Yet pain relief and a dignified death are not accessible for many in Gaza. Gaza is the most densely populated area of land on the planet, with a population of 2.1 million people on a strip of land that takes less than an hour to drive from the very north to very south. Despite high numbers of people living with chronic disease and advanced cancer, many of those suffering from these conditions are worried primarily about access to clean water and how to maintain electricity supply to keep their lights on.

There are some beacons of hope. There are healthcare professionals across the region who have championed new initiatives to help the people of Gaza access pain and symptom control medications and holistic medical care...
