Hey!
Did you try chatting with an AI? Did you ask it to draw your personal avatar? It seems artificial intelligence is everywhere these days, and it can answer whether we should divorce a husband, tell us what to cook for lunch, or even write a school essay instead of us...
But can it predict the future? Large language models are actually trained to predict words that come next. If I don't simplify too much, it is almost like an “autocomplete” function on a larger scale. In a sense, I didn’t have to write the word ‘scale’. AI could fill it up for me, as it can “understand” that I didn’t want to say “function on a larger beach”, for instance.
So, in a way, it does see the future, the same way the AI models in meteorology can tell us what kind of weather we can expect tomorrow.
With enough data, AI can predict what is going to happen with better certainty. Of course, the prediction could also be completely incorrect, and that is where the trouble with the lack of critical thinking begins.
I decided to ask AI what kind of travel trends we can expect in 2023. I chatted with two large language models and engaged with one AI writer to create an article that could forecast the traveling news of tomorrow.
Also, I asked several AI word-to-image generators to answer the same question with visual content. Some were more successful, some were lost. Because, even when it creates art, AI cannot do much without human creative input.
I find it a fascinating thing – us living in an era when we can engage in real-time conversations with machines. But I am utterly convinced we shouldn’t be trusting them completely yet.
Yes, not just in situations where AI should drive our taxi, but also when we just “want to learn more”, and get semi-convincing blabbering as a response.
There is no easy replacement for human intelligence, even when it has its limitations.
