Dear Families,
This is conferences week, which also means we have Early Release Days this Thursday and Friday. Dismissal on those days will be 12:30. Please make arrangements accordingly.
We have definitely seen fewer tardies in the morning since closing the carpool lane at 8:00. Please remember that if you arrive after the carpool lane has been closed you should walk your student to the door and text the number on the sign to check your student in for the day. Do not drop them off in the street and have them walk up by themselves.
If you have not done so already, please be sure to complete the Intent to Enroll survey for next year. This information helps us to determine any additional open seats for the lottery.
This week we will be kicking off our Black History Month celebrations. The overall theme for this year is Celebrating Black Excellence and Joy. Each week students will experience videos, activities, and presentations to participate in this celebration. Below is an outline of the month.
Week 1 - Celebrating Black Excellence and Joy: During the week students will learn about Black artist, inventors, and influential leaders. They will hear about the world's first black owned autonomous grocery store located south of Atlanta, and will learn to play some popular children's games from various African countries.
Week 2 - Hearing Black Stories from Black Voices: During this week, students will experience stories from the Marley Diaz series featuring popular Black celebrities reading books about a variety of aspects of Black culture written by Black authors.
Week 3 - Take a Visit to Atlanta's Sweet Auburn District: While enjoying the February break, your family may love spending time exploring what was once the "richest negro street in the world." We will be sending home resources to help you plan a trip around the Sweet Auburn District while away from school that week.
Week 4 - Experience the Excitement of HBCUs, Frats, and Sororities: During the final week students will learn about the start and importance of HBCUs. They will hear about how the Fisk Jubilee Singers saved their university and listen to one of their performances of a spiritual. In addition, we will be visited by members of different traditional Black, Greek organizations to talk about their important role in university life and their contributions through volunteering and community outreach. If you attended an HBCU we would love to hear from you. We are working to put together a video highlighting your experience and what you feel is most important about the role HBCUs play in the education system. Please reach out to me if you would like to be a part.
We have been having great turnouts at our open house events for prospective families, and many families are entering the lottery. This Tuesday we will be hosting an open house for prospective educators. If you know of an educator who would make a great addition to our staff, please let them know to join us Tuesday evening at 6:30. They will be able to learn all about the school.
Well as you can see, we not only have a big week ahead, but we also have a big month. Here's to a great start this week! I will see you in the morning.
Sincerely,
Mike

SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT
Immigration Perspectives
This quarter, 2nd grade is doing a service learning project around the ongoing refugee situation at the southern US border. Students are learning from community members who work with support programs, but would also love to have the perspective of any TMS community members who are immigrants to the US who would be willing to come to the school (or zoom in) and talk to our students about their experiences immigrating to our country, what they think is needed to respond to the current migrant/refugee crisis, and what kids can do that is meaningful to support those trying to seek asylum in our country.
Anyone interested in this opportunity can email 2nd grade teacher catherine.eisel-elder@themuseumschool.org coordinate details.

Hi families,
I just wanted to reach out and let you know that it looks like we are having a surge of COVID positive cases at school over the last couple of weeks. It seems like most cases are in the middle school grades. We wanted to update everyone so you can make your choice as a family what is best for you in regards to masking. We also wanted to make sure all families are aware that we still have plenty of free COVID tests if you need them.
It seems like the lower grades are having a bit of a hit with the stomach bug this week as well. I hope everyone stays well and has a good week ahead!
Please always feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Seeking TMS Mascot Input and Ideas
Hello TMS Students- We Need Your Input as we start the process of creating a visual character for our mascot- The Explorer. Your input and ideas will help go into the design of our future mascot character! When thinking about your character- consider what it means to be an Explorer at TMS. What does the Explorer stand for and how can it represent all of the students at TMS, as well as our Core Values? For more information, check out the flyer. We look forward to hearing and seeing your thoughts. Please submit ideas by midnight, February 19, to https://forms.gle/o5SBGeFVSyKFpe8Q7. All participants who submit an idea will receive a small token of appreciation.
