Neighbourhood Watch
Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby

eNewsletter #589 - 24 January 2023

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.
🚓 Please feel free to share/forward this eNewsletter with your friends, family, colleagues and neighbours.

Before heading out on the water this Thursday, take note of the restricted areas and times ⛵🚣‍♂️🛥️🚤
Special event areas can become very congested, especially along the edges of exclusion zones. Small craft should remain in calm waters, keeping well clear of larger craft, exclusion zones and congested areas.
Just like on land, operators of recreational and commercial vessels may be randomly breath and drug tested by our Marine Area Command.

NSW SES members.
Can you help Wollongong Police as they investigate an act of animal cruelty?
About 8.30am today (22 January 2023), a bushwalker located an injured Australian Bulldog in an upside-down kennel at the base of an escarpment near Clive Bissell Drive at Mount Ousley.
A rescue operation took place to retrieve the dog, involving officers from Wollongong Police District, Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, along with the SES,
It’s believed the kennel had been thrown off the cliff in the early hours of today.
The dog was taken to a local vet; however, sadly had to be euthanised due to his poor condition and injuries.
An investigation into the incident is underway by local police and RSPCA NSW ; the kennel has been seized and is undergoing forensic examination.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with a dashcam that drove through the area this morning and might have footage that can assist, to contact local police or Crime Stoppers.

A letter to Neighbourhood Watch Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby dated 18 January 2023:
A Neighbourhood Watch volunteer was walking home along the path from the nearby shops when they saw a little blue bag on a low brick fence. It was obviously lost by a small child. Wondering what to do, they realised that across the road was a preschool kindergarten. So they rang the kindergarten phone number, from the kindergarten's sign. A woman quickly appeared and crossed the road to collect the little blue bag. She thought it was probably lost when one of their children was picked up, and it may have fallen from a car roof. A good news story! Neighbours helping neighbours.
Thank you, David.

In New South Wales, the amnesty allows for:
Firearms or firearm related articles to be registered, supplied or surrendered to a participating firearm dealer without fear of prosecution.
Firearms or firearm related articles to be surrendered to a police station without fear of prosecution.
Prohibited weapons to be surrendered to a participating firearms dealer or police station without fear of prosecution.
A list of firearm dealers participating in the amnesty and a webpage to assist in locating your nearest police station are linked below. AFP supports Northern Ireland Police investigation into institutional abuse [edited]
The AFP is supporting the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s effort to locate women and children affected by institutional abuse between 1922 and 1990 as the search widens to Australia.
The Police Service launched an investigation in 2021 into allegations of abuse within Mother and Baby Institutions, Work Houses and Magdalene Laundries in Northern Ireland and believes victims and witnesses may now live in Australia.
They are appealing for mothers who gave birth in, or anyone who was adopted from institutions in Northern Ireland between 1922 and 1990 to come forward.

22 January, Shared with permission from the Pymble and West Pymble Community group:
Just a heads up.
A couple of guys were riding around Pymble on motorbikes, stopping and taking photos. One of them stopped and took photos of our trailer. My neighbour notified me of this, managed to get a number plate and flagged down a police car, who happened to be looking for them.
I'm Pentecost Avenue for reference. They also stopped up the road from me to take photos of something else (maybe the other trailer round the corner).
Consequently we have moved the trailer. It has security devices, but these guys generally know how to get round those.

19 January, Shared with permission from the Wahroonga Community group:

Hi Neighbors,
This might be a long shot and I want to give a try. My car, parked at 7 Lochville Street, Wahroonga, got hit from the back last night. There is no information left at the scenes. I am hoping if any of you might have seen or have some information for us. That will be a great help! Thanks in advance!
19 January, from Northern Beaches Command

Many of us keep our car keys at or close to the front door.
It’s convenient to grab them as we head out and drop them there when we come back.
Thieves know this too.
Now, they can remotely trigger these electronic keys to unlock our cars and drive them away.
As long as the keys are close enough to the door, the crooks don’t even have to bother breaking in.
It’s done usually at night when people are sleeping.
The first victims know about the theft is when they find a big empty space where the car used to be.
Keeping your keys well away from the door and out of range of crooks might not be so convenient, but it’s better than losing your car.
19 January, from NSW RFS Ku-ring-gai Brigade

Dealing with barking dogs…
🐶 If you're concerned about the excessive barking of a dog, you can find information on the potential causes, and advice on how to deal with the problem at the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) website.
🐶 If the noise is coming from your neighbour's dog, try talking to your neighbour as they might not know their dog is bothering you.
If the problem persists, there are a few ways to resolve the issue:
✅ contact the Community Justice Centre (CJC) to help mediate and settle the problem
✅ contact your local council who may issue a nuisance order (which incurs a fine for non-compliance) to the dog's owner, or
✅ seek a noise abatement order from your local court.
For more information on how you can deal with barking dogs, visit the EPA website

19 January, from the Hills Area Command

If a driver is turning left or right at an intersection, the driver must give way to any pedestrian crossing the road the driver is entering.
This applies to intersections with and without traffic lights. However, this rule does not apply at roundabouts.
For their own safety, pedestrians should always check their surroundings before crossing the road.

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Personal Safety'

Tip #2.
WHEN RETURNING TO YOUR CAR, HAVE KEYS IN HAND AND READY TO USE. Ask a friend to walk with you. Be aware of people in surrounding cars.

Tip #6: IMPROVE YOUR HOME’S SECURITY BY ARRANGING A ‘SAFETY AUDIT’ BY YOUR CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER (CPO). They can identify changes to make you feel safer. Phone Hornsby Police Station and ask for the CPO.

Tip #10: NEVER LEAVE KEYS IN A HIDING SPOT OUTSIDE THE HOME. Instead leave spare keys with a trusted friend. Consider Fingerprint, Key Pad or Bio Locks.

Tip #14. WALK IN WELL-LIT REGULARLY TRAVELED WALKS AND PATHWAYS AREAS. [Report a street light fault—Ausgrid 1800 044 808.] If followed, cross the street, crossing back and forth if necessary. If pursued, DO ANYTHING to attract attention—scream, pull a fire alarm, flag down a passing motorist, etc. Carry a personal alarm. Stay calm and in control.
