Our resident wine connoisseur, Gordon Readey, will lead us through an exploration of a region or varietal. This will be a very low-key gathering that will focus on fun and fellowship. If wine’s not your thing, please know that non-alcoholic beverages will be provided and all are welcome. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to Tom Power (tom.power@srsre.com).

A Note from Rev. Sarah:

Giving Thanks
for Marisol

Marisol Tria's ministry among us has strengthened connections in our community and sparked joy. Her encouraging spirit and contagious laughter have shared grace and peace with many. She has brought order and clarity to our daily rhythms. The care and support of St. Paul’s has meant a great deal to Marisol during her tenure with us, too.

Today, I write to share that Marisol has chosen to conclude her time of employment as St. Paul’s Office Manager. While this Friday will be her last one in the office, Marisol intends to wrap up several parish projects in the final days of January. We are grateful for Marisol's dedication in this busy season and we will miss her greatly.

Please pray for Marisol and for St. Paul’s during this season of transition, as we say goodbye and prepare to solicit and engage with applicants for this role in the weeks ahead. Feel free to contact me directly with ministry concerns in this time, especially urgent or pastoral matters. And may the grace and peace of God surround us all!

VESTRY NOMINEES
For One Year Terms - Class of 2023

James Hurrell

I am honored and pleased to be nominated for St. Paul's 2023 Vestry Class.

I was born in 1952 on the island of Tonga to a staunch Catholic family who installed in me a very deep commitment to my Christian faith. The lack of economic opportunities in Tonga caused me to go to New Zealand after High School. After fifteen years in 1988, I drifted to the United States where several siblings live in search of better opportunities. I met Elisapeti (Betty), fell in love, and got married. Betty's father, Rev. Malakai Lavulo , was the pastor of the Free Church of Tonga in Ca.( FCoTinCa). Because Rev.Malakai was getting on in age,  I helped him out in carrying out his pastoral responsibilities. When Rev. Malakai died in 1997, his brother, Lualala Lavulo, took over running the FCoTinCa and was joined by Fr. Sosaia Fineanganofo, who was a retired priest of the Anglican Church of Tonga. Lualala passed away and Fr. Sosaia Fineanganofo retired in 2015. The Tongan congregation was cast adrift. As the Warden of the Tongan Church, I petitioned The Rector Rev. Thomas Skillings and acting Canon Eric Metoyer to incorporate the Tongans as members of St. Paul's as Sa Paula Tonga. Thus, Sa Paula Tonga became a member in 2016. After Rev. Thomas Skillings retired, I took part in the Search Committee for the new rector, representing the Tongan Congregation.

Sarah Wiley

I am honored and humbled to be nominated to be a member of St. Paul's 2023 Vestry class.  I live in Burlingame with my husband, Karl, and three children. Owen is a sophomore at Wesleyan, Emma is in 9th grade and is studying ballet at the Alberta Ballet School in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Fiona is a freshman at Castilleja in Palo Alto.

We have been members of St. Paul's since 2005. We were attracted to St. Paul's because of its combination of wonderful music (my mother is a church organist and harpsichordist), fabulous children's programs, and warm and welcoming community. Emma and Fiona were baptized at St. Paul's and were in the choir school when they were younger. Owen has been a reader at services, and all three participated in the Christmas pageant when they were younger.

At St. Paul's I have helped to teach Sunday school and have helped with Home & Hope and the Giving Tree. In our community, I have served on the boards of St. Paul's Nursery School, the Burlingame Community Education Foundation, the McKinley PTA, and as President of the National Charity League, Skyline Chapter. In my professional life, I am a strategy consultant for healthcare organizations.

I am excited to participate on the Vestry and to give back to this wonderful community that does so much to share its gifts with each other and the world.

For Three Year Terms - Class of 2025

Tim Elliott

I am honored to be nominated for the Vestry of St. Paul's for 2025!

I am a 16+ year resident of San Mateo.  Our family -- my wife JJ, and our children Miller (16) and Lincoln (14) --  have attended St. Paul's since 2011, and we consider St. Paul's our spiritual home.  Some of our favorite things about St. Paul's include the Christmas Pageant, the Giving Tree, Bishop's Ranch, and the overall warm and welcoming community that is St. Paul's.

I have previously served on the Vestry as well as on the Stewardship and Rector Search Committees. Professionally, I am an in-house attorney and mediator.

I am excited to be a part of the Vestry as St. Paul's heads into its next chapter!

Hepeti (John) Fifita

I’m very excited to be joining the Vestry during these incredible times of spiritual journey and fulfillment.  My family joined St Paul’s in 2012 through Tongan Sa Paula in which several members of my extended family were active.

I’m married to Lupe with 3 boys. John Paul, 14, is a Freshman at St Francis High School. Sai, 12, and Joshua, 10, both attend Palo Alto Elizabeth Seton Catholic School.

I run a small handyman company here in the Bay Area and since I’m not yet familiar with some of you I might have been working at your house before!

Singing with the Tongan choir, cultural participation activities, and also preaching for the Tongan Service at 12:30pm energizes my faith and service to God. At present, I am a Sa Paula Deacon Postulant which I’m looking forward to accomplishing in the future.

I thank you for the opportunity to serve St. Paul’s.

Candice-Lee James

I am very honored and delighted to be nominated for the 2025 Vestry Class. I have been a member of St. Paul’s for 14 years and attend the 10:00am service. I was born in South Africa and moved to Burlingame in 2009. From my first visit to St. Paul’s, I  knew I was home and I found my church community.

I also played a very active role in my Anglican Parish in South Africa in the service guild, youth groups, hospitality and Vestry. At St. Paul’s I have been a greeter, helped out at coffee hours on Sunday, and lend a hand as needed.

I  currently work in the private sector as a Household Coordinator and enjoy the busy organizational schedule of various projects that I handle.

This is my first time being on St. Paul’s Vestry; yes, I  am a bit nervous yet very much ready to hear God’s calling to serve my community, and bring with me my sparky energy and joy.

I look forward to this opportunity to continue to support St. Paul’s as we move into this year.

Rue Richey

Soon after we moved to Burlingame in 2014, my family began our search for the right "church home." St. Paul's was the first church we visited, and we never looked further. We were attracted to the intergenerational mix and warmth of the community - aspects of St. Paul's that remain important to us.

David and I have two daughters: Olivia (17) is a junior at Carlmont High School, and Lexi (9) is a third grader at Episcopal Day School. We also have a 120lb. Shepweiler named Pepper who tries to be good during the annual Blessing of the Animals service! I was raised in Houston, met David in D.C., spent two decades in NYC, and am very happy to be raising my family in San Mateo.

My career has been in architectural and design media, but I recently changed industries, and I'm now working in global marketing for a chemical technology firm. My St. Paul's favorites include coordinating the Children's Christmas Pageant, parish weekends at Bishop's Ranch, white roses in the courtyard, being transported by powerful sermons, and the friendships I've made at St. Paul's.

I am thrilled and honored to be nominated for St. Paul's 2025 Vestry class.
