Tien Procent Club - over morele ambitie met Rutger Bregman
The Tien Procent Club is a community of people who want to become better at giving effectively.

Anyone who's interested can come to their events. They have about three a year, and they're growing fast. Hundreds will come on February 8th in Amsterdam to listen to Rutger Bregman speak about moral ambition, why he donates 10% of his income, and what the future holds for the Tien Procent Club.

You don't need to earn a lot to participate. You don't even have to donate anything! An interest in the idea is enough (and speaking Dutch helps).

Oh, and it's free?? And they have free (vegan) food and drink??

See you there on February 8th!

And the best part? It's completely free to attend! Just reserve a ticket or come by tonight at Dudok Den Haag by 19:30!

Missed tickets for the debate with Rutger Bregman? Come along to the warm-up act!
To help prepare me (James) for the abovementioned debate at Arminius, EA Rotterdam will host an evening to ask me the most creative questions and raise the most challenging points!

Once you've thoroughly crucified me, we will together come up with alternative responses and see what we can all agree upon.

The person(s) with the most creative question/challenging point will win a free ticket to the event on March 2nd, so take some time to prepare :)

Floris shares his story of donating a kidney
Rotterdam-based EA Floris Wolswijk recently shared on EAN's online hub his inspirational story of donating his kidney.

Why did he do this? In his own words, "by donating my kidney, I’ve given someone a second chance at life".

A new kidney will last for an average of 22 years. Kidney transplants are regularly done, and 98% of them are successful. Despite this, there are currently over 800 people waiting for a kidney in the Netherlands, waiting an average of two years for one to become available. If they don’t receive a kidney, dialysis is the only option. Of those waiting, 8% die and 14% see their condition worsen to a state where a transplant doesn’t make sense anymore.

While it's certainly not for everyone, quite a few effective altruists have done the same as Floris. In fact, the EA forum has an entire topic page on the subject!

Free books!
Want to order a FREE copy of an EA book? We've partnered with Impact Books to let you order a free copy from their selection of books relevant to EA! Impact Books is a service that powers book giveaways in the EA community.

We're doing this because these books have helped many people maximise their social impact and, on average, buying books to distribute can be more impactful than directly donating that money to effective organisations.

All you need to do is choose your book, fill in your details (put 'EA Netherlands' in the 'company' box), wait a week or two, and enjoy!

It usually isn't this empty!
Make sure you check out our co-working space!
As mentioned in previous newsletters, we recently opened a co-working space for EAs in the Netherlands!

Who can use it? Pretty much anyone who is interested in figuring out how to do good better! It's a great way to meet new people and exchange ideas about career plans and donations. We've also got a few books you can borrow! :)

We have four full-size (adjustable) desks (two of which have monitors + mouse + keyboard) and three spots on a 'cafe style' bench - see the photo. There's room elsewhere in the building if you want to make calls.

We're in the centre of Amsterdam (10 mins walk from the station) and we have a very sophisticated booking system (a Google Sheet). If you'd like to use the space just click the button below to book a workspace!
