Dear Faculty Colleagues,

Following on President Rosenbaum’s thoughtful letter to the community about the mass shooting in Monterey Park, we are writing to encourage you to understand that our students may be struggling to come to terms with this horrific incident. And the weekend tragedy has since been compounded by another California mass shooting on Monday, in Half Moon Bay and San Mateo County.

For course instruction and research, please try to be sensitive to the impact these events may have upon our students, and consider accommodating those who may need short extensions. Further, if you have a sense that a student may be struggling, for this or any reason, keep in mind that the deans value faculty input. The CARE team has a referral process (https://caltechcares.caltech.edu/), and you can also reach out directly to a dean about any student concern.

Thank you for your continued support of our student community.

Sincerely,
Kevin Gilmartin, Vice President for Student Affairs
David C. Chan, Dean of Graduate Studies
Lesley Nye, Interim Dean of Undergraduate Students
