|
This past week in Grade 5 OE, students ventured into beautiful Lynn Canyon. While hiking, they were encouraged to walk beside a classmate and discuss some of their environmental passions. From issues in our backyard, micro-plastics, over-fishing, deforestation, and old growth forests, students will choose a topic of interest to focus on as part of a multi-week, research based project. The classes will take action and create Public Service Announcements to showcase their knowledge and passion on the topic. Look out for the Grade 5 PSA videos in future assemblies, folks!

GRADE 2 TAKES ACTION FOR WATER CONSERVATION
|
|
The Grade 2 classes have been exploring our central idea: Water is essential to all living things. This week, we started to investigate how humans use water and all of the “hidden water” usage in our society. For example, we discovered it takes 2400 L of water to make 1 hamburger!
Students employed their research skills to find interesting facts about water conservation and thought of ways that we can take action to prevent water waste. To practice being in action, we created water conservation posters to raise awareness, and walked around our local neighbourhood to put up posters and educate our larger community.

Swimming
This past Monday, Brockton’s small, but mighty swim team made a splash at their first swim meet this season at St. George’s School. The team has been practicing since October and their hard work certainly paid off! Gillian and Madison (Grade 5), and Katerina and Hazel (Grade 6), gave it their all and represented Brockton well, sharing many laughs, positive attitudes, and a ton of cheer. Some highlights include:
3rd place for Hazel Leffler (11 year olds, 100m freestyle)
4th for Gillian Gibson (10 year olds, 100m freestyle)
5th place for Madison Young (10 year olds, 50m freestyle & 25m breaststroke)
7th for Katerina Von Berg (11 year olds, 50m backstroke)
Their next meet is on February 3rd and will be hosted by WPGA at Watermania. Go Grizzlies!

Basketball
The Grade 4 & 5 Girls and Grade 4 & 5 Boys Basketball Teams both travelled to Stratford Hall on Thursday, with both squads coming away with big wins in action-packed games. Their hard work at practices before and after school has translated to impressive skill growth and a solid understanding of the game. Both teams demonstrated outstanding defence, and put up an impressive number of shots. Congratulations, Grizzlies!
The Grade 6 & 7 Girls Basketball team continues to apply all of their new skills developed in practice to represent Brockton well on the court. Yesterday, they hosted Meadowridge, and with fans cheering on, the athletes played well as a team. Despite the loss, these Grizzlies are improving each week. Coach Stern and Coach Drought are very proud of their development thus far!

WEEKLY WELLNESS
FREE 6 WEEK COURSE FOR TEENS ON THE SCIENCE OF WELLBEING
|
|
A recent survey found that 37% of teens say they have poor mental health. This 6-week course aims to curb this mental health crisis by bringing together the best insights from Dr. Laurie Santos’ popular Yale course Psychology and the Good Life. In this course, teens will explore what the field of psychology teaches us about how to be happier, how to feel less stressed, and how to thrive in high school and beyond. The lessons along with short weekly ‘happiness homework’ assignments will ultimately prepare individuals to put these scientific findings into practice. The goal is to feel better and build healthier habits. Parents, teachers, and other professionals supporting teenagers may also find the course beneficial.
Note: This course does not confer Yale University grade, credit, or student status. Check out more information here.
