NDIS Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) 
Strategy Information Session 

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is co-designing a new Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (CALD) Strategy and action plan. We are doing this by working with people with disability from CALD backgrounds. This information session will provide an overview of the project and share key learnings about ways to improve the NDIS for CALD people with disability.

Fee free courses for Nurses and Midwives announced

QNMU members have lobbied for some time for fee- free courses for Nurses and Midwives to address critical workforce shortages. The QLD Government has listened.

For the duration of 2023, First Nations Queenslanders, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds can study a Diploma of Nursing for free, thanks to the Federal and State governments’ skills agreement.

Eligibility criteria will be managed by TAFE QLD & CQU.

Providers of mental health services funded by a Primary Health Network, organisations are now able to access interpreting Services funded by the Australian Government through the National Translating and Interpreting Services (TIS National).

Multicultural Health Symposium: A Culture of Care

The symposium is being held on Thursday 25 and Friday 26 May 2023 at Brisbane Technology Park. It will showcase current multicultural health initiatives from across the state and foster networking and collaboration opportunities. Over the two days, attendees will hear from industry leaders, peers, and community members.

The 3rd Australia and New Zealand Refugee Trauma Recovery in Resettlement Conference will be held in Adelaide from 9-11 October 2023, organised by the Overseas Services to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (OSSTT) on behalf of the Forum of Australian Services to Survivors of Torture and Trauma (FASSTT).

Individuals and communities from refugee backgrounds, clinicians, practitioners, researchers, thinkers and policy makers are invited to submit an abstract across one or more of the conference streams. More information.

These programs are funded by the Queensland Government at no cost to the participants. All courses starting in Logan area soon. Training in Pathways to a career in Hairdressing & Barbering is also available to help enhance existing skills into industry specific skill set to gain entry into various jobs within the hair industry. ECCQ - Expression of interest open

ECCQ is continuing to offer Building Austalian Skills for Employment (BASE) traineeships this year.

The program helps unemployed, qualified migrants and university graduates by providing training in workplace skills through the delivery of a Certificate 1 in Workplace Skills and 19 week paid work placement in local Queensland businesses.

Asylum Seeker Scholarship available

UniSC Asylum Seeker Scholarship aims to reduce those barriers. The scholarship fully covers the international student fees and includes a $4,000 payment every year. Plus, there’s a $1,000 up-front payment in the first year. As one of the best universities in Australia for our teaching quality and student experience, we are proud to offer an array of support services that are designed to help our students succeed.
 
We currently have four UniSC Asylum Seeker Scholarships for applicants who wish to commence their study in semester 1, 2023.

Utilities CALD Research Project  

The LOTE Agency is running its third round for its national utilities research project. 
 
Research Participant criteria:
  • Australia-wide
  • Participants need to be at least 18 years old +
  • Have low to moderate English proficiency
  • Participants must be involved in dealing with the utility sector (Paying, setting up accounts, calling customer service for their water, electricity, etc.)
  • Languages: Arabic, Chinese (simplified & Traditional), Dari, Farsi, Khmer, Korean, Nepalese, Spanish, Vietnamese.
Upon completion of survey, participants will receive a $15 Coles Voucher. The online survey takes 5-10 minutes to fill out.

Constitutional recognition through a Voice to Parliament

Logan City Council ran the Swim Logan program, funded by the Australian Government Department of Health, until December 2022. The Swim Logan program was delivered in partnership with Logan City Council, Aqualogan, The Aqua English Project and The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland.

Constitutional recognition through a Voice to Parliament is a body enshrined in the Constitution that would enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide advice to the Parliament on policies and projects that impact their lives.

A Voice to Parliament gives the Australian Government the opportunity to make policies with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, rather than for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
