Dear friends,
This Sunday is Candlemas, also known as The Presentation of The Lord and The Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast commemorates the presentation of the baby Jesus in the Temple which is recorded in the Gospel of Luke. In accordance with Jewish Law, a woman was to be purified by presenting a lamb as a burnt offering and either a young pigeon or dove as a sin offering, 33 days after a boy's circumcision. It falls on February 2nd, which is the 40th and final day of the Christmas season.
In the Gospel reading, we hear the old man Simeon declare the child Jesus to be the light of the world, which is why we begin mass with the blessing of candles in the Parish Room and then process into church to symbolise the entry of Jesus into the Temple.
