Parent Resources - Communicating clearly

Communicating clearly involves making sure that we both express ourselves and understand others with accuracy. Active listening is a key part of healthy communication, and takes a great deal of practice and skill (specifically, skills like mindfulness, which allows us to focus our attention on just one thing). In conversations, it’s common to jump to conclusions or experience a strong emotional reaction—either of which can make it hard for us to hear another person’s message. Being aware of these challenges and working on active listening techniques can help improve communication between your student and others.

To strengthen this lesson, try this activity with your student at home:
Take a moment to ask your student about their day. Model active listening (e.g., put away your phone, nod, make eye contact.). Then switch roles, encouraging your student to practice active listening while you describe your day to them.

TRAILS is offering a virtual opportunity on the topic of suicide awareness and prevention for caregivers and community members. Please see the attached flyer for details and access to the presentation.

Current COVID-19 Guidance

If your child tests positive for COVID-19, 5 days of isolation is recommended. Individuals may return any time during days 6-10 if their symptoms are largely resolved and fever-free without the use of medication. It is also recommended that a mask be worn on days 6-10. Each school is required to report all communicable diseases to the Kent County Health Department (KCHD). If your child tests positive for COVID-19, please notify your building administrator. Thank you for helping keep everyone safe!

Students are issued “Way to Go” cards for demonstrating Respect, Responsibility or Personal Best by doing the right thing!  As students receive these cards, they are placed in the container located in the Main Office. Every Friday, names are drawn and announced during the afternoon announcements.  Each student selected, has the opportunity to pick a prize from the prize basket simply as a way to say “Thanks, we appreciate and recognize you!”

Our winners for this week are:

Leo Wikander, 6th Grade
Kelty Wiser, 6th Grade
Caroline Jacoby, 7th Grade
Lauren Hecksel, 8th Grade

Lost Items
Please encourage your student to visit the lost and found located near the entrance to the cafeteria.  Unclaimed items will be donated at the end of the second trimester.

Middle School Ski Club
Ski Club will meet at Cannonsburg from 6:30-8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.  Students should look for the flag on the deck, where they will find a parent volunteer to help in case of emergencies.

We’ve been sharing some wonderful news for our students! A committed alum has made the largest individual gift ever to the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation. The donation will support student mental health and wellness in all our schools by creating a designated fund for this purpose.

The Mental Health and Wellness Fund will provide funding for district requests that support:

  • Social work and counseling staffing

  • Professional development in mental health and wellness

  • Student training in mental health and wellness

  • Enhancements to learning or counseling spaces that will support mental health and wellness

  • Materials that support social emotional learning for students, staff, and parents

Local news outlets including MLive, WZZM, WOOD, and School News Network have all covered the story. You can read more about what this amazing donation will do for our students on our website, egrsf.org.
