A Reflection by Fr. Bernard Olszewski

Pictured: Fr. Bernard in front of our newly installed statue of the Holy Family in our parish commons.

Dear Parish Family of St. Jerome,

Last Sunday, as a community of faith, we sang the words of our responsorial psalm: Here am I, Lord, I come to do your will” and were reminded in our readings that we, like John the Baptist, are called to be the prophetic light of Christ in the world in which we live.  I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your warmth and hospitality in welcoming me into your midst for the weekend.  Thank you for your engaged and prayer participation in the Eucharistic celebrations and your greetings afterwards.  It was my privilege to be with you for the weekend and to be the voice of the poorest of the poor served by Cross Catholic Outreach throughout the world.

I could offer thanks for the impact of the gifts made to the poor through Cross Catholic Outreach but instead I will let them offer those thanks themselves:

From Nicaragua - A shallow, hand-dug well was the only drinking water source for Francisca, a mother of 4. Her daughter Emelyn "would get sick with vomiting and diarrhea from parasites."
With the support of generous donors like you, Cross Catholic Outreach worked with an in-country ministry partner to provide Francisca's rural Nicaraguan community a safe, new water system.  On Emelyn’s behalf – thank you!

From Guatemala - "Today I feel so happy for the house you gave me. I thank you so much. I ask God to protect you wherever you are. For the love of God thank you..." -Rosalina Hernandez
Thanks to your support, Rosalina and her beautiful family - including her 4-year-old granddaughter, Mariela, have a home to sleep in tonight.

From Kenya - Thanks to your support of the St. John Bosco Rehabilitation Center in Kenya, Duncan Ejikon was able to take the national high school entrance exam and enroll in school. His future is bright and he is thriving and he is eternally grateful for the donors who made his dream come true.

These are the miracles which can happen each day in building the Kingdom of God because of the generosity of parishioners just like you.  If you were not able to be at church on the weekend or if you did not take a brochure please feel free to see how you may help by visiting our website: crosscatholic.org/outreach or by texting the word BLESSINGS to 474747.

May God bless you and keep you!  May the Lord turn his countenance to you and smile upon you.  May the Lord show His face to you and give you His peace!

Fr. Bernard Olszewski

June Gerlach Funeral

The Funeral service for June Gerlach will be Tuesday, January 24th at 12:30 PM at Weymouth Funeral Home (12746 Nettles Dr, Newport News, VA 23606).

There will be a reception at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 12742 Nettles Dr, Newport News, VA 23606 following the Funeral.
We've recently installed an amazing wood carving of the Holy Family in the Church Commons. Pictured here is Jim, our Maintenance Tech, after successful installation.

The carving comes from a closed church from the Diocese of Pittsburgh, recently acquired when Fr. George was touring their Patrimony Warehouses for things we can use to improve our sanctuary space.

For those wondering what happened to the painting of Jesus that used to hang there, it's been moved to the Faith and Life Classroom Building, where a lot of the artwork that artist painted already hung.

The beautiful painting of Madonna and Child has been moved to the rectory!
Fr. Charles Saglio Funeral Arrangements

The Funeral Mass for Fr. Charles Saglio will be held at St. Jude's Catholic Church (1014 Clay St, Franklin, VA 23851) on Saturday, January 14th at 10:00 AM.

Additionally, on Friday February 3rd St. Jerome Catholic Church will host a Memorial Mass with Inurnment at 10:00 AM.  There will be a reception following and all are invited to join us.
Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Training

There will be a training session at Church on January 21 at 10:00 am for anyone interested in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.  We are in desperate need of additional Extraordinary Ministers at all Masses and to take Communion to the Home Bound.  You can be an EM at the Mass you attend or take to the Homebound or both.  The training session last an hour to an hour and a half.  If you are not sure if this is a ministry for you come to the training session and have your questions answered and find out what it is all about.
Congratulations to Marek and Natalia Barencewicz on their 60th Wedding Anniversary (and thank you to an eagle eyed parishioner who spotted this in the local paper)

The Stories We Tell Our Children Have Consequences

Stories matter. We tell them to help us understand the world around us. But what if the stories we tell don’t mirror our Catholic morals? What if the lessons that they teach don’t agree with our values? Should we keep telling those stories?
