Do you remember that old JG Wentworth commercial, where the people are yelling "it's my money and I need it now!"? That's how I feel about joy in my life.

I'm trying to stop feeling like I have to earn my joy. I'm not talking about using things I enjoy as a positive motivator like getting a smoothie after the gym or using the promise of a video game as a carrot for finishing my work for the day. I'm talking about that toxic nonsense where I can't do this thing that would help me clear my head and supply me with some dopamine like paint or go for a walk because I haven't done all of the things I need to do, but I'm so exhausted and burnt out that I can't do the things I need to do, so I don't get to do the thing that might bring me joy.

Are you guilty of any of that? Let's try and stop that silliness. It's our joy. We deserve it now. I think the key is realizing those self-care things, those things that bring us joy are need-to-dos. You know, the whole "put your oxygen mask on first/fill your own cup so you can take care of others" thing?

Not so we can take care of others, but because that's what we deserve, for us, for our own wellbeing. It likely means you will be in a better mental state to take care of your family, still, that's just a nice bonus, not the sole reason you should indulge in things that bring you joy. Being a human is hard, we should be soaking up all the good we can because the hard stuff never stops and doesn't care if we are prepared or not.

So who cares if there is a sink full of dishes but you really just want to binge-watch Ted Lasso and color in a coloring book? Relax, take that time, and do it for yourself.

It's our joy and we need it now!

Easy ceviche de camaron (shrimp ceviche)

A healthy, quick-to-toss-together, and throw-in-the-fridge meal or appetizer sure to thrill any seafood lover.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 kilo shrimp (frozen or fresh) (About 1lb) I've used frozen (thawed) shrimp and fresh and both work well for this recipe
  • 7 limes/lemon I prefer a mix of 5 limes/2 lemons, but as long as you use enough of both to keep the shrimp covered to "cook," it's fine
  • 1-1 1/2 cucumber
  • 2 Roma tomatoes
  • 1 large avocado 2 if they are small, but I prefer mine avocado friendly because of yumminess
  • 1/2 red or white onion
  • 1 jalapeno remove the seeds if you don't like so much heat (the seeds are what brings the spicy)
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro more or less according to taste (I like more, my husband prefers less)
  • 1/2 cup clamato juice/V8
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp salt
  • hot sauce optional
  • tostadas optional
  • pinch black pepper optional

Instructions

  • Chop up shrimp into small pieces and cover completely with lime/lemon juice
  • Put in a glass bowl with lid/baggy/Tupperware and store in the fridge for about 2 hours for shrimp to "cook" it will turn white/less opaque when it is done
  • Dice everything else, mix with seasonings and clamato juice
  • Combine shrimp and veg mix, and serve over tostadas with guacamole and a healthy splash of hot sauce (if preferred)

More than meets the AI: ‘Pre-AGI’

by Tristan Greene

The first time I got genuinely giddy about a journalism project was when I got the green light to write my first series. I pitched a “beginner’s guide to AI” to my editor and my career as an AI reporter was suddenly off and running. Over the years, I ended up writing several series for The Next Web and Neural.

I did a beginner’s guide to the AI apocalypse with a bunch of fun explainers on how things could go horribly sideways if we don’t develop AI in a human-centered way. And, of course, my favorite series was one that had nothing to do with AI, the “Games to play on Date Night” review series that continues on Love is a Fetish. I even had an amazing and satisfying run as the editor of the “Coronavirus in Context” and “Neural” newsletters.

But one thing I’ve never had the chance to do is write a column.

More than meets the AI will be my first. And I couldn’t be more excited! We’ve decided to focus specifically on “pre-AGI” technology because, from where I’m standing, there isn’t a more exciting field to cover. We’re living through the genesis of a techno-industrial revolution that will almost certainly birth wholesale disruption on a global scale.

Famous composer François Chopin's heart was preserved in a jar of cognac because he had a fear of being buried alive. His taphephobia ultimately paid off, however, as researchers were able to posthumously determine his probable cause of death after 170 years.
