Community & Youth Fishing Day
Background
The Waikanae Boating Club holds a community fishing event once a year for members of our community who would ordinarily never have the opportunity to go fishing, and who have endured hardship and challenges in their lives. ‘Youth & Community Fishing’ has grown year on year becoming a highlight of the clubs’ events calendar.  The event is entirely funded by sponsorship and donations, and no cost recovery is sought from the participants. Unfortunately, the event did not go ahead in 2022 but we are looking forward to hosting our next event on Saturday the 11th of March 2023.

10-year anniversary
Since this event first started back in 2012 the weather gods have been on our side.  The 10th year anniversary was supposed to be this year but as previously mentioned we could not hold this due to Covid restrictions. We will be holding some celebrations to acknowledge all the previous skippers, first mates and all the other helpers (traffic management, watch tower & coastguard crews, to name but a few) after the 2023 event so please watch out for these updates in the Club newsletter.

Overview of past events
A briefing is held on the Tuesday before the event where the participants and their care givers are introduced to their Boat skippers. They have their life jackets fitted and are provided with the Hunting & Fishing clothing for the event, which they get to keep as a reminder of their day on the water.

The day starts with breakfast at the club rooms. The fishing programme commences at approximately 08.00 with the skippers taking the participants fishing around Kapiti Island. While out on the water all bait, food and drinks are provided for the participants and their care givers.  Fishing concludes in the early afternoon when the boats return to the clubrooms where any fish caught are filleted by club members and distributed amongst the participants. The day concludes with a BBQ for all participants and their families.

A new addition to the event was introduced in 2020 in the form of a helicopter flight for participants and their support person. The flight takes off from the carpark adjoining the Waikanae Boating Club and takes passengers out to the back of Kapiti Island and circles back over the Island offering spectacular views and photo opportunities.  This is a once in a lifetime experience for our participants and part of the overall package of a “best ever day out”.

The day is overseen by club members manning the watch tower and the local branch of the Coast Guard, traffic control etc.  Safety is of course a major priority.

How can you help?

There are several ways each member can help.

We need some more skippers – If you would like to join in on the day please contact Dick Stent on 027 442 5804 / rstent@xtra.co.nz or Lyn Williams on 022 310 3249 / lyn1973@hotmail.com. You will find this a very rewarding day and will want to come back year after year like our other skippers. Note: boats will need to meet certain standards to be eligible.

Help with the fileting – If you are able to help fileting on the day, please contact Lyn Williams on 022 310 5249 / lyn1973@hotmail.com

Waratahs – The club is looking for 6-10 waratahs to be used for putting up signs during our various fishing events.  If you have any that you would like to donate, please drop these off to the club or phone Steve Kelly (021 0222 7303) who can pick these up.

Make a donation - The event costs money are we are always looking for our supportive members and the community to support us financially.
If you would like to make a donation you can credit this straight into the Youth and Community Fishing Bank account (details below) or you can request an invoice by emailing officewaikanaeboatingclub@gmail.com.
