Missionary Emma Geswein

Updates from Ethiopia

This newsletter is a review of the last two years
that I've been living and serving in Ethiopia!

Two years ago, I committed to becoming a full-time missionary in Ethiopia and serving with Be There Ministries. I sold my car, said goodbye to my family and friends, and moved everything to a new country. I was blessed (and still am) to have overwhelming support from so many back home!
I began mission work by doing routine home visits with the families we serve. This was a lot of walking through the trash dump, even after I became pregnant 7 months ago. We walked through the beating sun and through the many rainy days to visit our families and share the love of Jesus.
The first new thing that I wanted to implement were weekly Bible studies with the women in our program. This has become routine for us, they are getting to hear the gospel weekly, and I've bonded with many of them in ways I couldn't have otherwise!
Later on, we started a tutoring class to teach a few women how to read and write in Amharic, their native language. This empowers them to be educated for themselves and my hope is that they'll be able to read the Bible one day.
I've had the pleasure of working with many kids, from the children in the school program to the street boys ministry that was started in 2021. I've assisted in teaching them and giving them love that they've never found in their homes or on the street.
Another aspect of this mission work that I love is leading or co-leading teams! Various families or teams have come to visit Ethiopia and see firsthand the work that we do here. I've enjoyed getting to bond with new people and inviting them into my corner of the world in Ethiopia!
I've gotten the opportunity to start two new projects – the tarp project and the spice project. The tarp project was in 2021, where we raised funds to cover some of our families' homes that leaked in preparation for the rainy season. The spice project was in 2022, where we raised funds to hire some of our own women to make essential spices and distribute them to the rest of the families as a type of food drive. Both of these projects were successful and I was so excited to see them come to life!
As you all know, God has blessed me by giving me an amazing husband to be by my side in life and in ministry. He's helped me by giving medical care on home visits, participating in clinics, and translating for Bible studies and tutoring classes. Now we are expecting our first baby boy! I know God has much more in store for us to serve Him and I can't wait to see what our future holds.
After reviewing everything that I've gotten the opportunity to do over the last 2 years, all I can say is I thank God for guiding me through ministry and all of my partners for making this possible! You are all greatly appreciated and I'm so blessed to have you on this mission with me.

"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." Isaiah 43:19

I can't thank each of my monthly partners enough for joining me on this mission! You make all of this possible. I'm so grateful for these opportunities and I don't take it lightly that God is calling me to do this work. Please pray as I continue to work with many needy families and continue to adjust to life in Ethiopia.
