UNECE at Davos

Enabling environment & de-risking investment needed for #climate #finance, says @UNECE 's @algayerova at @Davos #wef23. Investors could tap potential of $10bn project portfolio presented at #COP27, with a focus on the #CriticalRawMaterials needed for rapid #decarbonization

Deputy Executive Secretary of UNECE Dmitry Mariyasin further stressed why transparency and common standards matter for Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices and decarbonization efforts. He highlighted the use of traceability tools for fashion sector value chains developed under UNECE’s The Sustainability Pledge, and the contribution of the UN Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) and the UN Resource Management System (UNRMS) to Life Cycle Assessments and companies’ ESG calculation, reporting, and disclosure.

Transport

Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan pave the way to a digital era of the TIR system

The first electronic TIR (eTIR) transport in line with UNECE’s TIR Convention has taken place between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. This development crowns long-lasting efforts by the TIR Secretariat to modernize international transport and transit. In 2023, the secretariat plans to expand the interconnection of national customs systems with the eTIR international system to as many of 77 contracting parties as possible, especially along the corridors connecting Central Asian and Middle Eastern countries.

Forum of Mayors officially established at UNECE

Cities are at the forefront of the battle to address some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, from climate change to pandemics and disasters. To boost efforts towards a more sustainable, resilient, inclusive urban development, the UNECE Executive Committee decided to establish the Forum of Mayors as a subsidiary body of its Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management (CUDHLM). It also appointed Architect Norman Foster as the “Advocate of the Forum” for 2023.

THE PEP

Netherlands to host meetings on active mobility and sustainable tourism mobility

The upcoming meetings of THE PEP Partnership on Active Mobility and the Partnership on Sustainable Tourism Mobility will focus on challenges in promoting and developing policies for walking and cycling, as well as exchange views on sustainable mobility in tourism. The meetings will take place back-to-back from 23 to 26 January 2023 in Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague in The Netherlands. This is the first time that a UNECE member State is hosting both meetings of the partnerships at the same time, which will facilitate the exchange of ideas and expertise among members.

City Diplomacy Lab at Columbia Global Centers in Paris recognized as UNECE Centre of Excellence

UNECE and Columbia Global Centers | Paris (CGC|Paris) signed a Memorandum of Understanding recognizing the City Diplomacy Lab at CGC|Paris as a UNECE Centre of Excellence in France. The cooperation will contribute to the development and implementation of collaborative activities and projects to promote the principles of the Geneva UN Charter on Sustainable Housing. The City Diplomacy Lab will provide municipalities in the UNECE region and worldwide with best practices, research, support and training in the areas of city diplomacy and smart sustainable urban development.
