Pastor's Note

Dear new friends,

I work within the walls of your physical church as the Program Coordinator of the Interfaith Conference of Greater Milwaukee, so it is my pleasure to preach at your worship service this Sunday.  I greatly appreciate the work of Interfaith for there are some deep truths that are often found outside our dogmas and traditions.  We will be highlighting the life and ministry of The Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King Junior, who you should know was greatly influenced by satyagraha ("love-force") philosophy of the Indian Hindu leader Mahatma Gandhi, when in seminary and always found allies in different faiths as he peacefully pushed for the inclusion of all people in our society.

I have been intrigued by the lectionary, your wonderful pastor has had you start following, as it purposely does not ignore any part of our Holy Text.  The 25 verses that fall on this Sunday, includes one of my favorite verses as well as some challenging.  I will be focusing some on the more challenging, but I do share the one that is my favorite when Jesus says, “See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.”  It first reminds me of my wise spiritual director for chaplaincy, who would often say, “God is Foxy.” In a lovely Irish brogue.  Her office was filled with foxes because of this saying, and all knew she was making it clear that the Divine is cunning and sly, and while the fox is not considered innocent by the farmer or the chicken, we all know from Fantastic Mr. Fox he is just trying to feed his family and community (once he learned his lesson).  This scripture reminds me to be true and innocent in sharing my love of the Christ, but to not be blunt and violent.  We, like God, must use wisdom and cunning that will let people ultimately know and see what the Divine is doing in the world.  It is ultimately their relationship with the Divine that will offer them the salvation and love, we know for ourselves, and we can only share that God is foxy and will use our own systems and circumstances to reveal this deep Love we know God to be.

I hope this Sunday to explore how the writer Matthew is himself is reflecting on God’s wise use of the Human Condition to save us, and we get to be a part of it with the help of the Sprit.

Sincerely,
Rev. J.C. Mitchell
