CORRECTION TO SUNDAY'S SERMON (JANUARY 15)
FROM: Pastor Dave
DATE: Jan 19, 2023
I want to make a correction to Sunday's sermon. I misspoke when I called Agabus a female prophet. Agabus (Ἅγαβος) A masculine noun, was a man. I am very appreciative of the number of people who checked me on this statement. That is very Berean of you.
Acts 17:11
“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”
With all sincerity, I appreciate the examining of the text as we go. The important thing is that we get it right. Well done and thanks.
The point I was making was that women have been prophets throughout the Scriptures. The confusion for me happened in the text leading to it.
Acts 21:8-10
“On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. He had four unmarried daughters, who prophesied. While we were staying for many days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.”
I thought Agabus was one of the four unmarried daughters.
The point remains that women were prophets throughout Scripture:
Miriam Exodus 15:20-21
Deborah Judges 4:4
Isaiah’s wife Isaiah 8:3
We believe Elizabeth and Mary were prophets, because they spoke prophecies.
Elizabeth Luke 1:41-45
Mary, Jesus’ mother Luke 1:46 ff
Anna Luke 2:36-38
Philip’s four daughters Acts 21:9
I wanted to clarify this and very much appreciate those of you who so kindly and gently asked if Agabus was a woman or man.
