<<First Name>>,

Despite several rather dapper individuals visiting us from time to time, this week's newsletter is not about fashion. Rather, it's about the style in which tasks are executed.

While the inspiration for the topic comes from observations at the climbing gym, we see the pattern of how people with high-level experience, particularly at the nationally competitive or higher level, perform on the range, on the track with motorcycles and also in the climbing gym.

At the gym, there is a route set that for an experienced climber is a nice, gentle warm up. Big comfortable handholds, good feet, one slightly tricky move about 2/3 of the way up. This particular route also happens to be leadable, which means that the climber is able to climb above the rope and clip the rope into quick-draws/anchors placed along the route so that they are protected in the event of a fall.

The tasks for the climber are thus: climb to the top AND clip the rope into the quick-draws on the way up. This involves a little bit of planning, task stacking and task switching. For a climber who has the component hard skills of climbing (by using handholds and placing feet properly), route navigation or sequencing the holds in an efficient manner, and clipping the rope in the quick-draws mastered to the subconscious competence level the task stacking and task switching happen very fluidly. For this level of climber, the route takes maybe 90 seconds to complete and most likely less. They reach the top with a barely elevated heart rate and feeling very little stress.

The climber who hasn't yet mastered the three component hard skills outlined above or perhaps has only mastered one of the three reaches the top with a considerably higher heart rate and feeling a great deal more stress. Chances are this climber spent considerably more time navigating, figuring out the holds, and clipping the rope. They likely also used considerably more energy via less efficient and unoptimized techniques in doing so while also exposing themselves to considerably higher risk of falling/failing to complete the route.

Lastly, the climber who doesn't know what they don't know attempts the route on top rope where they are securely attached to an anchor at the top and will unclip from the quick-draws as they go up. This climber will reach the tricky spot about 2/3 of the way up and get stuck despite many attempts. The climber is using their lizard brain's attempt at technique and trying to force their way up the route. This is highly inefficient and despite the climber being a highly competitive high school varsity level athlete results in their muscles being completely exhausted before they are able to complete the route.

The main reason we tell this story is because we see similar things all the time on the range because most "experienced" shooters fall into the category where some critical hard skills have yet to be fully mastered. We see some tasks being performed brilliantly while the wheels are falling off on other skills simultaneously. Add pressure in the form of competition, a shot timer and paper targets, or simply dudes watching other dudes perform and the stress risers that cause performance to crack form very quickly.

Making a consistent effort to master all of the fundamental hard skills related to running the gun, marksmanship, moving with the gun, and fighting with the gun will go a very long way to stacking the deck in your favor in the event you end up in an in extremis kinetic problem solving event. As humans, we don't rise to the occasion but rather fall to the level of skill that we have truly mastered.
