Next Roundtable on 15 February!
The First World BioEconomy Roundtable of the 2023 season features experienced and insightful speakers from four continents representing the biotechnology and bioproduct sector discussing the looming biorevolution. The event will include short introduction presentations followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Ludo Diels

We will also speak about the latest developments in the bioeconomy on a global level. The bioeconomy is emerging as one of the major streams of the economy. There are more voices suggesting that the time has come to talk about a global hub for the bioeconomy.

The World BioEconomy Roundtable will be held on 15 February 2023 from 13:00-15:00 CET! It will be an online event and the theme will be "Bioproducts Around Us" focusing on the topic "Biorevolution knocking on the door".

The Roundtable will be hosted by Mark Rushton and Jukka Kantola.  The roundtable is organized in the framework of the G-STIC conference in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

There will be a prestigious and highly notable set of panellists including:

Meet the Panellists
Meet Dr. Jibin Sun, CAS Distinguished Professor and Deputy Director General. Dr. Jibin SUN obtained his PhD degree in Biotechnology at Technical University Braunschweig/German Research Center for Biotechnology(GBF), Germany. He joined Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology (TIB) as a full professor in 2008. He is the winner of a number of national/provincial awards, board member of China Biotech Fermentation Industry Association, board member of Chinese Society for Microbiology, and Vice Chairman of Tianjin Society for Microbiology.

He did substantial contributions to the foundation of the institutional core facility and the National Center of Technology Innovation of Synthetic Biology. In the past years, he published more than 100 peer-reviewed papers in leading international journals and applied 90 patents.
Meet Genét Garamendi, Founding team member and the Head of Strategic Relationships and Communications for Checkerspot.

Checkerspot is a design-centric advanced materials company. Passionate advocate for solutions that are better for people and our planet. Checkerspot is breaking new ground at the intersection of biotechnology, chemistry and materials science.
Meet Dr. Andrew Kiggundu, Principal Research Officer, affiliated with the National Agricultural Research Organization in Uganda. He specializes in plant biotechnology, regulatory biosafety, stewardship, and communication for policy advocacy in Africa.

He has served as leader of the Biotechnology and Biodiversity Programme leading teams that worked towards sustainable utilization of Uganda’s genetic resources.  He is the founder and CEO of Papyrus Biotechnology a Ugandan private firm dealing in research and consultancy on applications of biotechnology across agriculture, healthcare, and the environment.
Meet Thiago Falda, Executive President at the Brazilian BioInnovation Association (ABBI). Thiago Falda is Biologist graduated by the State University of Londrina (UEL), PhD in Genetics and Plant Breeding by the University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP) and have been devoted the last ten years to governmental and institutional relations to promote the engagement and consolidation of the Brazilian biotechnology sector.

As a member of the Brazilian delegation and representing ABBI at the last two Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity - CBD (COP 13 and COP 14), Thiago coordinated the construction of the Brazilian industrial biotechnology sector position about Synthetic Biology, Nagoya Protocol and Digital Sequence Information. 
Meet Giulia Gregori, Head of Strategic Planning and Corporate Communication at Novamont, one of the world’s leader in the bioplastics sector and in the development of biochemicals and bioproducts from renewable origins. She is responsible for Strategic Research&Innovation Projects and Corporate Communication, managing also external relationships with public and private funding institutions.

She is Secretary General of the Italian Cluster of Circular Bioeconomy SPRING and member of the National Coordination Group for the Bioeconomy at the Presidency of Council of Ministers, in charge of the development and implementation of the Italian Bioeconomy strategy. In addition, she is member of the Governing Board of Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) and member of the board of directors of the University of Eastern Piedmont.

The contents of the discussion which the panellists will cover will include the following:
  • Most interesting application areas for biotechnology?
  • What kind of regulatory cooperation would be needed in the international level to enhance development of the bioeconomy?
  • What about education to this sector? How it is organised in your region?
  • Is there a space for a safety and security matters to be taken into account? What about standards, norms?
  • How about international classifications for the bioproducts? Is there any need for these?
  • In case there is a global home for the bioeconomy what of the topics from biotechnology should be discussed and agreed in a global level?

We are pleased to introduce Rafael Cayuela as the World BioEconomy Forum's newest member of the Advisory Board 2023. The World BioEconomy Forum Advisory board is in charge of composing an attractive programme and advocating potential speakers. The Advisory Board is also responsible for composing the the annual Declaration of the season, which is subjected to the comments of season’s speakers and members of the World BioEconomy Circle

Rafael Cayuela is the EMEAI Senior Strategy Development Director, Corporate Chief Economist & the Chair of the EU Sustainability Leadership Team at Dow

Externally, he is the Chair of CEFIC (European Chemical Industry Association) Mid Century Vision Molecules Manager, while also serving on multiple international advisory boards as well. Rafael is an economist with over 20 years of experience within the chemical industry. Rafael is also the author of the Book “The Chemical Industry by 2050.
