Loreto Highlights Update - 20th January 2023
Prayers with Bishop Carmel
His Lordship the Bishop joined the Loreto staff in a prayer service on Wednesday, to celebrate the beginning of a new year. His Lordship Bishop Carmel blessed the school and staff and spoke about the important role we as educators have. It was a lovely opportunity to come together as a school community in quiet reflection and prayer.
Tiny Tums Tasting Sessions
This week, Tiny Tums invited parents and carers to a tasting session of their food within the school's lunch hall. This was a great way for parents and carers to gain an understanding of their child's lunchtime experience, by sitting at the table, watching the staff put together their food and of course, eating the food!  This was a great opportunity for Tiny Tums to show and discuss their menu, answer questions and receive feedback. The whole experience was positive and ended with some parents asking for their children to be signed up for hot lunches.  Parent feedback  The parents were pleasantly surprised with how excellent the food was and described the food as "delicious". The cod and potatoes were the biggest hit with parents informing Tiny Tums that "this is what I make at home" and "my child will definitely enjoy this". It was also great to see some parents bring their children along and taste the food with their children, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. This also gave the parents comfort knowing that their children were enjoying their lunches at school.
Tiny Tums aims to provide children with a positive lunch time experience. They welcome the children as soon as they walk in, they provide assistance and encourage the children to eat as much as possible. Children are also rewarded with stickers for eating their food. We have already seen a positive response from the children and hope to continue this throughout the school year.

Canoeing Champion
Last week, Mike in Year 6 was rewarded for his achievements on the Panhellenic canoe kayaking development championships.  He attended a prestigious awards ceremony where his trophy was presented by the Greek Chief Minister.  Well done Mike!
Graffiti
Year 2 enjoy using whiteboard pens to write words on our glass window. This helps us remember our key words and our spelling rules.
Dive in!
Swimming lessons down at the GASA Swimming pool have started for Year 5 & Year 6.
Jesus
Year 2 are learning about the miracles of Jesus.  The pupils enjoyed singing along to some songs, and listened to the story of the calming of the storm. The pupils made their own origami boats!
Nautilus Lab & LSSC
On Tuesday of this week the Loreto Sustainable Schools Committee members were lucky enough to visit the newly opened Nautilus Laboratory.  The pupils were amazed to see all the shells, fossils and hear about the work that a Marine Biologist does.  The pupils were very interested in the microscopes, one of which you can take pictures from your mobile phone!  The pupils asked some very interesting questions, including ones about the ocean wind speed monitoring and how the lab analyses water samples and plankton samples - very similar to the lesson work they have experienced with Mrs Garner in the Science Department.
Library Awards
Our Mr Reader awards scheme continues, and pupils have been reading their library books at home and during lunchtimes.  Our Library Prefects Cecilia and Nicolas presented the certificates and awards to the pupils.
Football Crazy!
The World Cup has turned everyone football crazy! Upper Primary have been working on their football skills, including control, passing, shooting and decision making under pressure.

ICT Skills
During their Computing lesson this week pupils in Year 3 have used the Smart Learning program to practise some of their word processing skills.  The pupils are able to apply what they have been taught. They have changed the size, font and colour of the text, along with using the bold, Italic and underlining tools and inserting images from clipart.

Gold Book
Well done to pupils in Lower Primary and Foundation Stages who were presented with their Gold Award certificates and gold pencils.
Sharp Shooters
Year 2 have been learning about the basic Netball rules such as footwork, obstruction and the three second rule. They've taken these skills to the next level by adding some shooting to their game.
Architecture
Year 4 have been studying architecture as part of the lessons with Mr Morello.
Rugby Stars!
Year 1 have been learning the basic concepts of Tag Rugby. This includes lots of running, coordination, spatial awareness, changes of direction and even some tactics.
Fractions
Year 6 have had fun with fractions this week. They have learnt how to simplify fractions and find equivalents. Soon they will be moving on to adding and subtracting fractions. Year 6 loved using ‘fraction dominoes’ to consolidate their learning at the end of the lesson.
Cold Geography
The Year 1 pupils have thoroughly enjoyed exploring cold places around the world for the past two weeks. They have learnt about the North and South Pole and the animals that live there.  The pupils have worked creatively across the curriculum and have produced some excellent art and writing. They have also enjoyed using our Arctic-themed tuff tray where they engaged in sensory, number and oral language activities.
Jumping Around
Foundation Stage 2 have been learning all about different ways of moving as part of their Gymnastics lessons. They've been jumping, rolling, twisting and turning to help develop their fundamental movement skills.
Starry Night Foundation Stage 2 pupils have been little artists this week. Our topic was night/dark and using Van Gogh's famous painting, The Starry Night, they were asked to recreate this using paint and their fingers. This was very successful, and the results were amazing.
Faith Diary
Today’s Gospel describes the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. When he hears that John has been arrested, he immediately heads to Caparnaum to take up John’s message and begin His own mission. Seeing Simon (Peter) and Andrew fishing in their boat, he tells them to follow him and he will make them ‘fishers of men’. Astonishingly, they immediately drop what they are doing and leave their boats, nets and past lives behind to follow him and his teaching for the rest of their lives.  Jesus makes that same call to ‘follow him’ to each one of every day, at every Mass.  Unlike Simon and Andrew though, we are not usually called to leave our homes and work behind to do so - all we have to do is allow him and his teachings to enter our lives and hearts, and do our best to take them to all those we meet in our normal,  everyday lives.
Arctic Tuff Tray Nursery 2 pupils have been learning all about winter by exploring an arctic tuff tray. The tuff tray was full of different materials for the pupils to explore as well as sea creatures and animals.
Patterns
Another fantastic tuff tray for our Nursery 2 pupils to learn all about patterns. The children used bright coloured bottle tops to make their own patterns. This activity is also a great way to learn colours, whilst developing fine motor and communication skills.
Sensory Fun
This week our Nursery 2 pupils have had great fun exploring a light sensory room in their classroom. Sensory lights provide stunning effects and help to create stimulating environments for all needs. This form of play helps children to focus on specific sensory elements in their environment. It is also lots and lots of fun!
