Weekly Briefing
January 20, 2023

Dear <<First Name>>

Board meeting summary - January

Held at Upperby and online, 18.01.2023

Attendance: Matt Spooner (Chair), Alastair Woodcock (Secretary), Chris Armstrong, Billy Atkinson, Kieron Bulman, Dan Maclennan, Dave Noble, Malcolm Nugent, Carol Wilson

Apologies: Nigel Davidson

Despite the high number of injuries this season we have been assured that CUOSC's investment via Carlisle REUnited in the NordBord is paying off. It is in constant use by club staff and helps to monitor the fitness of players and gives an idea of potential injury risks.

The Board agreed to discuss the future direction and structure of CUOSC at an internal meeting in early February. The outcomes from this meeting will be shared with the membership and wider fanbase for further consultation.

A food bank collection was discussed and provisionally agreed for the 18th February on the day of the Colchester United home match. More details to come in due course.

Progress on organising a Quiz Night was also made. The date will likely fall in March and will be announced as soon as arrangements are made.

The current bank balance is over £4k. Membership had reached 600 due to non-paying members joining recently. Non-voting members can join for free if they provide us with postal and email addresses. They will receive regular updates from us via email, including the weekly briefings.

Next meeting: Feb 15

News & Star column 19.01.2023

It seems a long time since the Blues had a substantial crowd for a Tuesday night home League game.

There’s usually live football on TV plus work, weather and transport problems mean attendances are generally below average.

But in times gone by a Tuesday night atmosphere at Brunton Park was something special and over the next couple of weeks the Blues will be hoping to turn the clock back.

With United chasing an automatic promotion place they will be hoping for bumper turnouts for the re-arranged fixtures with Hartlepool on Tuesday and then the Cumbrian ‘derby’ with Barrow the following week.

The return of ex-United manager Keith Curle with the relegation-threatened Monkey Hangers will add a little bit of extra spice to next week’s fixture.

And there’s is nothing much worth watching on the TV – we won’t count the League Cup semi-final between Southampton and Newcastle!

With the visitors, hopefully, bringing a few hundred fans with them the crowd could get up and over the 6000 mark for what is certain to be a tough battle.

The Barrow match the following week on Tuesday January 31 doesn’t need any selling. With both teams in the promotion race – who would have thought it – it has been eagerly anticipated.

The visitors sold over a 1000 tickets for the postponed Saturday fixture and although that number will be seriously reduced there should still be a fair turn-out.

Supporters of both teams have been looking forward to this one and it should be a cracking atmosphere.

Fans have been backing the Paul Simpson ‘revolution’ all season and there’s every reason to hope they will turn out in big numbers for both games.

Just to underline the point the Blues will have over 1000 fans cheering them on when they travel to Bradford City this weekend – a brilliant effort.

It was good to see United getting a pat on the back this week in an independent report that assesses the match-day experience for families.

Each season the club receive two unannounced visits and are given feedback and recommendations on how to improve.

The first visit concluded that the club sees “families as integral to its match day and, as a result of this, its chances of attracting and retaining more future fans are increased.”

The Fan Zone, where CUOSC will continue to maintain a presence on a Saturday, was just one of the areas highlighted as a strength.
