PEICP Introducing New Preceptor Authorization in Registration Database

The PEICP is introducing a new preceptor authorization within the registration database in an effort to improve preceptor/student/provisional records and tracking. Found within the registrant database menu, pharmacist and pharmacy technicians, eligible to act as preceptors to students and provisional registrants, can submit an application for an authorization to be a preceptor (Supervisor).  Once an application for a preceptor (supervisor) has been submitted and approved, pharmacy students and provisional registrants will be able to select an approved preceptor from a drop-down menu when submitting an application for registration.  Students and provisional applicants will continue to be required to submit a signed preceptor site approval form as part of their application, as this online functionality has not yet been enabled in the database.

A Preceptor/Supervisor authorization is valid during a registration year and will require renewal prior to the next registration year.  There is no cost to submit an application for a preceptor/supervisor authorization.   Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians who will be or anticipate they will be acting as a preceptor to a student or provisional registrant, will need to login to their registrant portal and submit an application prior as soon as possible.

Methadone Dispensing-Learning From Recent Incidents-Ontario College of Pharmacists

The Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) recently reported in Pharmacy Connection, an increase in the number of complaints involving community pharmacies providing Opioid Agonist Treatment (OAT).  When OCP analyzed the reports, some similar themes have been identified as potentially contributing to these errors including:

  • Equipment limitations for low dose methadone prescriptions
  • Wider range of therapeutically appropriate doses
  • Misinterpretation of the prescription
  • Pharmacists who are acting in a temporary or relief position at the pharmacy may not be familiar with OAT
OCP outlined a number of areas for improvement that could be considered by pharmacy managers, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians:

  • Creating, amending and/or reviewing written policies and procedures
  • Designing the dispensing workflow to allow for multiple checks to verify correct entry, dose preparation and labelling.
  • Ensuring that every prescription has been assessed for therapeutic appropriateness prior to being dispensed and that standards of practice on patient assessment and documentation are met.
  • Verifying that staff have the necessary and up-to-date knowledge, skills and judgment to provide
