Empowering Black Women in Tech
February is Black History Month, and WWCode is celebrating Black women in tech all month long. The tech industry would not be where it is today without the contributions of brilliant Black women both past and present, including the women in our community. Trailblazers like Katherine Johnson, who pioneered the use of computer calculations at NASA or Gladys Mae West, whose mathematical modeling of Earth became the GPS technology we know today.
Black women continue to pioneer innovative solutions in tech. Technologists like Jessica Matthews, founder of renewable energy startup Uncharted Power, brings energy to underserved areas. Chanelle Hardy, Head of Civil and Human Rights at Google, founded the Google Next Gen Policy Leadership Program to diversify tech policies. Ashley Jane Lewis, Creative Technologist, crosses biology and tech and uses slime molds to demonstrate societal structural inequalities.

Remembering Tyre Nichols (1993 - 2023)
We're 30 days into 2023, and as a nation, instead of celebrating hopes, dreams, and goals for the new year, we find ourselves yet again mourning, shaken, and heartbroken —
On January 7, 2023, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who enjoyed taking pictures of sunsets, skateboarding, and spending time with his family was brutally beaten by police officers in Memphis, Tennessee during a traffic stop.
