Are You Being Kind to Yourself?
January 20, 2023

First, From the Heart

The question is often hard for us to answer honestly. Am I really being kind to myself? Never? A little? Sometimes? Many of us don’t even stop to think about it. Our conditioned nature is to care for others, with little attention to our own needs and desires.

It’s an especially important inquiry for leaders in this community, who care deeply about compassion and work tirelessly to end suffering and the causes of suffering wherever you are in the world. We tend to put ourselves last, even though on a rational level we understand the profound benefits of inner compassion and self-kindness.

This year, let’s support each other to do it differently. Let’s take a stand for each and every one of us to practice treating ourselves with the care and kindness we so easily offer to others. Together let’s hold the question in our hearts, make it a priority, share inspiration, and practice every day. The time to love ourselves is now.

Stay kind,

Laura

Compassionate leadership isn’t a new concept. You may already be a compassionate leader. Your organization may already be putting the principles of compassionate leadership into practice. In fact, many of our Compassionate Leadership Certification Program alumni were already compassionate leaders before they ever took one of our programs. 90% of those alumni interviewed said that they would recommend the course to their friends and colleagues. 70% said that they had seen changes in their companies.*

The live online 8-week training will build your compassion from the inside out and connect you with a powerful global peer community for ongoing inspiration and support. Research has measured statistically significant growth in participant’s self-compassion, compassion for others, compassion at work, and resilience.*

We offer two 8-week certification programs, one for Global Health professionals and one for leaders in any discipline. Bringing Self-Kindness Into the Workplace: Exploring the Mediating Role of Self-Compassion in the Associations Between Attachment and Organizational Outcomes
by Abira Reizer
in Front. Psychol., 21 May 2019

“The research findings suggest that self-compassion can provide a solid mechanism for understanding organizational outcomes and for understanding individual differences related to attachment functioning in the workplace.”

“...The positive associations between self-compassion (with) job performance and organizational citizenship behavior and the negative associations with emotional exhaustion and turnover intention provide support to the cumulative research relating to self-compassion as a healthy and adaptive intrapersonal mechanism. As the modern workplace provides the employee with endless challenges, barriers, cognitive and emotional demands, and other difficulties, the ability to provide comforting self-love and compassion to oneself may ultimately expand one’s resources to face these workplace difficulties more effectively.”

Achieve the Extraordinary: Unlock the True Power of Purpose
Free Online Event presented by The University of Michigan Center for Positive Organizations
Monday, January 23, 2023, 11AM - 12PM ET

The University of Michigan Center for Positive Organizations presents its Positive Links Series, “Achieve the Extraordinary: Unlock the True Power of Purpose”.

A revolutionary approach to business exists, one that delivers game-changing results for both organizations and society alike: the serious and deep pursuit of purpose. When organizations practice deep purpose, furthering their “reason for being,” it can revolutionize how they do business and deliver impressive performance benefits that reward customers, suppliers, employees, shareholders, and communities.

Join CPO for a conversation with Ranjay Gulati, Harvard Business School Professor and author of Deep Purpose, hosted by Robert E. Quinn to learn why organizations need to embed purpose much more deeply than they currently do, treating it as a radically new operating system. They’ll discuss ways to conceive of and relate to purpose and how to execute it. You’ll learn how you can use the power of purpose to unlock hidden potential in yourself and your organization. Register here.

Practice Matters

Kind to Me

Over the years, I’ve struggled to eliminate many harmful behaviors and cultivate new ways of being to create more love, joy, and contentment in my life. Hard as it sometimes still is to be vulnerable and open, I do my best to greet strangers on the street with genuine loving attention – a nod, a smile, and a hello. Even if I’m having a difficult day, this simple act of acknowledging another person from the heart lifts me up. My wish is to share a spark of human connection. Whether or not it is received, I’ve done what I can in that moment.

How curious then, that bringing that same sense of lovingkindess to myself is the hardest practice of all. When I look into my own eyes, can I acknowledge that I too am just human? That I am deserving and worthy of love, just because I exist. Can I turn toward myself with the same love I extend to others? I practice generously accepting my joy and suffering, along with all the other emotional waves that flow through my day. I practice so that I remember “I am love.”

When can we practice? Always!
