Looking Ahead in Worship

February 5, 2023
Rev. Rod Richards
Worship Associate: Susan BaileyKadin
Kumbaya
A song that lends itself toward joining together in friendship and peace has become little more than a joke in our current times. Does that say something about this song? Or about these times?

UU & YOU
U(nitarian) U(niversalism) and YOU (are welcome here!)

Are you a recent visitor to our congregation brimming with questions about what those two ‘U’s’ stand for?
Are you considering membership, yet wondering just what exactly membership means?
Are you a new member looking to learn more about our history and find ways to shape our future?
Are you a seasoned member who wants to delve deeper into understanding our tradition and our congregation?
Would you like to share your story and hear from others about how they came to be here and what this congregation means to them?
Are you tired of reading all these questions and ready to ask some of your own?
You’re all encouraged to attend UU & YOU gatherings to learn about where we came from, who we are, and what we can be together. You need bring nothing but your questions and reflections.

ONSITE: On the First Sunday of February. Meet at noon in the Social Hall.
ONLINE: Second Sundays beginning February 12, at noon in the Worship Zoom Room.

Worship Arts Committee Asks for Input from UU's

It’s obvious we are going through a period of change – coming out of COVID isolation and moving into combined services. With this in mind, the Worship Arts committee wants to know which aspects of the Sunday service help UUs renew their sense of connection to our UUSLO community? What makes visitors want to return? If you attend on Zoom, what helps you experience UU values?

To give us a better idea of what might increase a sense of connection, the Committee will informally survey congregants and visitors about their Sunday morning worship experience. For that purpose, in the next few weeks, WA committee members plan to ask some of the following questions:
What is your experience on arriving, during, and leaving the Sunday UUSLO Service (in-person or online)? What parts of the service help you connect and feel alive, present, and engaged? What aspects of service interfere with your feeling connected?

Consideration of your Sunday experience in-person or on Zoom could include the following:.
  • Your interaction with Greeters, with other members, with the Minister, with the Director of Religious Exploration
  • Interaction between the Minister and Worship Associate during the service.
  • Visual factors such as the look of the altar
  • Technical aspects of the Zoom Service, use of the Zoom screen at the in-person service
  • Music selections and performance, choir performance and/or participation, selection and singing of hymns
  • Elements of the service, such as the Welcome, Call to Worship, Doxology, Chalice Lighting, Time for all ages, singing the blessing as children exit, community presentation on second Sunday, sharing Joys, Sorrows & Concerns, meditation & times of silence, passing baskets for the offering, readings, sermon, benediction, extinguishing the Chalice and postlude.
  • What do you experience that makes you want to come back (in-person or on Zoom)?

To share your response with any member of the Worship Arts Committee, you are invited to set up a conversation or express yourself in an email to one or all of us. Thank you for your interest and for helping us to connect with you.

BASIC LATIN DANCE CLASS
SUNDAY, JANUARY 29, 12:30-2 pm
 SOCIAL HALL

Did you miss bidding on this item at pre-pandemic UUSLO auctions? No worries! You can still learn basic salsa, merengue, and cha cha steps soon after the Sunday, January 29 service, in the Social Hall. Just make a $20 per dancer donation to UUSLO before the class. (And make sure to indicate that the donation is for "Latin Dance Class"). Beginners and guests welcome!

We will focus on individual, not partner, dancing. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes and bring your own refreshments for short breaks during the class. Wearing a face mask is also strongly encouraged. The instructor is Lata Murti, a UUSLO member who has taught this class twice before as a UUSLO auction offering. She herself was a student of Basic Latin Dance at Merecumbe Dance Studio in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Last Coffee with the minister for January 2023!
Deepening connections, one cup at a time…

This is open to everyone, whether you like coffee or prefer another refreshment (or none!). My “coffee shop schedule” for the upcoming month is below; I invite you to stop by if it is convenient for you. There is no agenda, just conversation and connection (though I may invite any reflections you may have about the theme for January: The Path of Finding Our Center). Look forward to seeing you!

LIT WITS 2/7/23

Lit Wits Zoom meeting is at 6pm on February 7.  The non-fiction book for February 7 is Braiding Sweetgrass:  Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teaching of plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Drawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings offer us gifts and lessons, even if we’ve forgotten how to hear their voices. She circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world.

The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles is our novel for March. Librarian Odile joins the Resistance in WWII in Paris. Her story shows that heroes can be found in unlikely places.

ZOOM LINK:  We meet at 6pm on the first Tuesday of each month.  We are meeting on Mary Parker’s Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81618487257

GETTING SERIOUS ABOUT CLIMATE ACTION

Alternative Super Bowl Party

We are thrilled to have one of the most positive people on the planet speak at UUSLO's Climate Community's next meeting.

Don Maruska focuses his business and legal talents on the climate. He just published "Solve Climate Change Now: Do What You Love for a Healthy Planet." Don will share how to put Joy into your life while helping the planet. He has been instrumental in developing a spiritual earth stewardship program at St. Benedict's in Los Osos, and will tell us about their efforts. This will all kickstart our thoughts about UUSLO interfaith possibilities.

Don is also a Master Certified "Coach" - perfect for the day of the Superbowl. How does a taco bar sound? We promise to have you out well before the one-woman-show at UUSLO by violinist Brynn Albanese. And of course well before kickoff!  Please RSVP to one of the emails below so we know how much food to prepare. We will ask for a donation this time, but we do want you all to come!

Date:  Sunday, February 12
Place:  Our social hall
Time: 12 noon to 1:30
Program: Don will speak for about 30 minutes, have a Q&A, and then you will have an opportunity to buy his book  - well worth the price of $15.

After we listen to Don's "coaching," each of us will commit to at least one of the five priorities we created at the January 15th meeting. Next meeting is tentatively set for March 5th.

Brynn Albanese
in a One-Woman-Show
@ UUSLO on February 12 at 2 pm

DESCRIPTION: Brynn is a well-known and loved multi-genre violinist on the California Central Coast. She has been seen front and center as Soloist and Concertmaster on numerous Performing Arts Center stages with a wide variety of groups in the area as well as the ever-popular World Music Band, Café Musique. During the Pandemic, Brynn created a One-Woman-Show using backing tracks and recordings of her own band in the living room of her Cambria home. Aware that people were starving for LIVE music, in person, she took to the streets, cul-de-sacs, medians, yards, balconies and driveways and has performed over 175 Concerts and Educational Shows since April 2020. A mix of European gypsy, Latin jazz, classical with a twist, opera covers, movie score trivia and a big splash of Celtic... she has created a lively, engaging and interactive show that she has now taken on the road!

LOCATION: This performance will take place at Unitarian Universalists San Luis Obispo (UUSLO), 2201 Lawton Avenue, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401.

DONATIONS ONLY: This is a fundraiser for UUSLO. A suggested Donation of $20 per adult will be gratefully received, at the door or in advance via brownpapertickets.com

MASK ETIQUETTE: Mask wearing is highly recommended but not required.

Enjoy the concert and then take in the Super Bowl. There's time for both.

Joys, Sorrows & Concerns - 1/22/2023

Jan Meslin: Today, my friend and UUSLO colleague Judy Ellis celebrates her 91st birthday. I admire her energy and community participation. Currently, Judy is part of the 8th Principle Working Group and the newly formed UUSLO Climate Community.
Janet Lester and the Music Committee:  Concern: We only recently discovered that Brynn Albanese's show is scheduled for the same day as the Super Bowl! For those of you that may feel torn between a fabulous concert and a great sports event, consider that you can probably do both. Kick-off is not until 3:30 pm PST. The show is a 90-minute concert without an intermission, so it will finish by 3:30 pm. There is a reception with refreshments after the show for those who wish to mingle for a while. Sports fans can just grab a cookie and head home to watch the game. YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!

Ken Hill: I had the joy of being at the Zoom UUA Board meeting for the delivery of the Article II Commission Report. This section of our bylaws defines who we are as Unitarian Universalists. It was applauded as a beautiful statement to carry us into the future. Their work is a great example of how we are a living tradition and work democratically from the bottom up. I love this Unitarian Universalist faith!
Laurie Weymann: My Mom had emergency surgery last night. She is stable in the ICU this morning. Please send healing energy and love to Joyce.
Rod Richards: There was a mass shooting at a ballroom dance studio in Monterey Park, CA about seven miles east of Los Angeles, last night, killing 10 people and injuring 10 others at last count. What has been truly chilling to me is to realize that I have not remarked upon a number of mass shootings that have occurred in the past year or two. It felt like I would be doing it every week and, after a point, what does one say? What do we have to offer? We send our sympathy, of course, our love as best we can, to all those who are grieving, whose lives were connected to this who have died or where injured, to all those who experienced this traumatic event whose lives are, thereby, forever changed.

Sometimes, I wonder about how we count the injured. What kind of injury ripples out from these events, exacerbated by the stubborn resistance of elected leaders to make any efforts to address this ongoing violence and brutality?

I fear this event will soon be submerged in a sea of news and that there will be little ripple effect except injury and pain. May we work to make that prophecy wrong. May we never leg go of the conviction that there is more love and more hope somewhere.

These folks are building a house in Tijuana

Want to travel to Tijuana with a group of UUs to help a family build their house? I'm excited that two of you are interested in going on this April trip, and plan to attend the January 28th orientation!

Partnering with https://casasdeluz.org  (a project of San Dieguito UU Fellowship), the UU Justice Ministry of California is sponsoring a 3-day housebuild and then visit to binational Friendship Park, from April 13-16, 2023.

The UUJMCA’s Immigrant Justice Action team has been sponsoring border immersion trips to Tijuana since 2013 (Rev. Rod, Douglas, Gina, and Jan, went on one in 2019). On the April trip, we will learn more about U.S. immigration policy from people directly impacted, as we help them build their home in an emerging Tijuana community. We will stay in an orphanage. There is no fee but we ask that you make a donation for materials. See link below.

After the build, we plan to spend Sunday morning at binational Friendship Park to attend the binational “Border Church” before going home. Right now binational Friendship Park is in danger. The new additional 33-foot border wall is being erected. Learn more and get involved at https://friendshippark.org

Join UUJMCA to learn, serve, reflect, enjoy good food and fellowship. It is a great way to live into your UU values along with others who are working for an immigration policy rooted in collective liberation.

Of course I'm going and will be driving to San Diego if you need a ride.     -Jan Meslin, for UU Justice Ministry of California

From the Article II Commission...

"... the proposed version of Article II we have presented is indeed a significant departure from our current version, just as past changes to Article II were significant changes from their predecessors. The 1985 version which first introduced the Principles was a radical change from the Purposes and Objectives of the previous version. We are continuing in the line of proposing changes that fit the times in which we live. We fully expect that one day another Commission will review our work and significantly change it. We are writing this in pencil, not etching it in stone."

Interdependence. We honor the interdependent web of all existence.
We covenant to cherish Earth and all beings by creating and nurturing relationships of care and respect. With humility and reverence, we acknowledge our place in the great web of life, and we work to repair harm and damaged relationships.

Pluralism. We celebrate that we are all sacred beings  diverse in culture, experience, and theology.
We covenant to learn from one another in our free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
We embrace our differences and commonalities with Love, curiosity, and respect.

Justice. We work to be diverse multicultural Beloved Communities where all thrive.
We covenant to dismantle racism and all forms of systemic oppression.
We support the use of inclusive democratic processes to make decisions.

Transformation. We adapt to the changing world.
We covenant to collectively transform and grow spiritually and ethically.
Openness to change is fundamental to our Unitarian and Universalist heritages, never complete and never perfect.

Generosity. We cultivate a spirit of gratitude and hope.
We covenant to freely and compassionately share our faith, presence, and resources.
Our generosity connects us to one another in relationships of interdependence and mutuality.

Equity. We declare that every person has the right to flourish with inherent dignity and worthiness.
We covenant to use our time, wisdom, attention, and money to build and sustain fully accessible and inclusive communities.

Central Coast Coalition for Inclusive Schools

is the recipient of the UUSLO
February Community Outreach Offering

Central Coast Coalition for Inclusive Schools (CCC41S) is an affiliation of individuals and organizations which actively support the development of safe and affirming school communities.  CCC41S strives to celebrate diversity, advocate for social justice, and transform educational cultures by empowering youth, families, professionals and organizations. I can assure you that CCC41S ' work is in alignment with Unitarian Universalist SLO's principles as our work helps to ensure that all students are treated with respect and given an opportunity to thrive, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, ability, gender identity or gender expression.

CCC41S was formed due to a lack of implementation of The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful Education Act, passed in 2011. This law requires California public schools to provide Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful representations of our diverse ethnic and cultural population in the K-12 grade history and social studies curriculum, such as instruction in the study of the role and contributions of LGBT Americans, persons with disabilities, and members of other cultural groups, to the development of California and the U.S. Often such laws are passed without "teeth" and without funding, as result progress has been slow.

Your generous contribution will be used first and foremost to support our organization's work analyzing the California Healthy Kids Survey data. Every other year, 7th, 9th and 11th grade public school students take this survey. The first time students had an opportunity to self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender was in 2013. Since 2013, CCC41S has obtained the CHKS raw data and prepared detailed reports regarding bullying, assault, suicidality, substance abuse, etc. and comparing the experiences of LGBT students versus straight, cisgender students. These reports have provided the much-needed proof that LGBTQ+ students are at a much greater risk on our campuses and have opened doors to SLOCOE, school districts and county cooperation.
