Middle School Iberian League Event Hosted by ASV

This week, American School of Valencia hosted Middle School Girls Soccer and Basketball Tournaments as members of the Iberian League. The event combined two exciting competitions with eight teams representing ASV and three invited schools: American School of Barcelona, Cambridge House Community College and Caxton College.

Our basketball team was runner-up after playing the final against Caxton College. This was a tight and intense game that finished 27-25.  In the soccer tournament, one of the two ASV teams played the final and beat American School of Barcelona (4-1).

Many thanks to all of our participating student-athletes, their families for their ongoing support of athletics, the ASV students who came to cheer on their classmates and to the ASV faculty-staff for accommodating the class schedules and supporting student-athletes.

More details on the Iberian League Tournament held in Barcelona this week and a thrilling video of our event will be included in the next edition of ASV Voices.

AYM Mathematical Modelling Challenge

Students in Grades 5 through 10 are invited to take part in the Association for Youth in Mathematics (AYM) Mathematical Modeling Challenge, a co-curricular activity organized by High School Students and supervised by the ASV Math Department. The activity aims to develop a passion for this science and acquire an entirely new way of seeing the world through a mathematical lens.

This activity is aligned with the ASV Transfer Goals, especially those that help to apply Math in real-life situations.   “Teams of four students will work collaboratively in order to answer an open-ended question using mathematical means,” Grade 12 student Danila K. describes.   “In this edition, the challenge is open to other schools: American School of Barcelona, American School of Madrid, and Benjamin Franklin International School,” Mr. Mario Muñoz (Math Coordinator) adds.

Stay tuned for further news on this activity throughout the Spring Semester.

PBIS Students' Goal: Pie in the Face Contest!

Kinder through Grade 5 students have been working hard to earn 55,000 Dojo points by showing ASV Care Values in all areas. Not only did they meet their goal of 55,000 points but surpassed it by earning a grand total of 62,093 points!

All their hard work paid off and Dr. Murphy and Ms. Rubio were pied in the face by the top two classes from lower and upper elementary. For lower elementary, Kinder Blue was the top earner with 7,403 points and Grade  2 White was second with 6,772 points.

For Upper Elementary, Grade 5 White was the top earner with 7,437 and Grade 3 White was second with 6,304. Ms. Martinez,  Ms. Vitorino, Ms. Riaye, and Ms. Crespo really enjoyed the chance to pie their academic leaders, almost as much as the kids enjoyed watching it.

For the Spring 2023 Semester, students will need to earn 85,000 points to reach their goal. Students are also busy generating ideas on what the grand prize will be if they reach that goal. One popular idea that has been brought up is a water fun day in June! Maybe even a Dunk Tank for Dr. Murphy and Ms. Rubio.  Stay tuned for further details!!

We will be hosting our next PS-ES Coffee Talk with the Principal for both Preschool and Elementary parents on January 26, 2023, at 14:00 via Google Meet. These talks are an opportunity to connect and are focused on sharing upcoming events, discussing general questions generated through our Parent Delegate Teams, and providing opportunities for dialogue and a venue for sharing specific topics that parents have requested to learn more about. In addition, we have related this topic to the Spanish vocabulary on family and food,” Ms. Arjona describes.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Mobile Phones in Middle School

At ASV, we want to create an academic environment where students can engage and work distraction-free. Studies show that having a mobile phone can have an adverse effect on student attention, even when safely stored away in their bags. Even students with the best intentions, will immediately feel the temptation to answer messages from parents and check social media when an alert comes through. This constant pull on their attention can affect the stress level of students and their mental health. Lastly, GDPR rules and our own Technology Use Agreement include very strict guidelines with regard to students under 14  and use of photos for instance.

For these reasons, Middle School students are not permitted a mobile phone at school. If they are required to bring one in order to communicate with families at the end of the day, it should be stored safely in their lockers from 09:20 when they arrive until 16:20 when they leave.

We would like to ask parents to support our expectations for the benefit of their children and their well-being.

THIMUN 2023

American School of Valencia will be Represented by 15 Delegates and Two Student-Officers

Students are prepared to discuss and debate a wide range of real-world environmental, economic, political, and human rights issues with thousands of students from around the world gathering together with the main goal to find solutions to challenges facing global leaders today,” MUN Co-coordinator Mr. Boyer describes.

We wish the ASV THIMUN Delegation the best of luck in their endeavors, and we also wish the same to Marc V. and Ismael M, our students who have achieved prestigious student officer positions at this year’s THIMUN conference.
