PRESIDENT'S CORNER

Jackfruit, who knew?
One of the fun things about living in Banderas Bay is discovering new things. Many of you may know about Jackfruit, but we didn’t. Jackfruit or Jaca as it is called in Spanish made its way on ships from Tahiti in the eighteenth century to Nayarit! It turns out, Nayarit from San Blas south along the coast to PV grows 90% of the Jackfruit in Mexico. Thanks to growers in our area Jackfruit is available year-round. It is also available in the US but only May to November.
Driving North a few weeks ago we noticed fruit stands all along the 200-highway full of Jackfruit packaged in saran wrap. Jackfruit comes from the same species as fig and mulberry. The jackfruit tree can yield 100 to 200 fruits annually. The average Jackfruit weighs between 10 and 25 pounds each! The largest can weigh up to 100 pounds! The Jackfruit trees are the largest bearing fruit trees.
The taste is distinctive, quite similar to bananas or pineapple in denseness. It is a bit sweet but not too sweet and when cooked I am told tastes like pulled port. I can say it doesn’t taste like chicken. Vegans use it as a meat substitute. Now why would you want to put it in your diet? I read that it contains fiber, protein, vitamin A C and B and has lots of potassium. Those nutrients are said to help manage weight, blood sugar, and keep skin and the heart healthy. The only warning is don’t eat with milk or dairy products or carbonated beverages. Apparently, that can be toxic and lead to stomach and skin problems.
Bill and I are slowly adding some Jackfruit to our diet. You must not feed or let your cat near jackfruit since it is very toxic to them. Dogs can only eat jackfruit flesh, but Teaberry isn’t getting any, although he has tried begging for it!

This clinic was a total success, a considerable amount of animals were sterilized at Punta de Mita. We also have amazing volunteers who supported us all week and we are happy that Shalimar has already returned from vacation and we have her back at the clinics. Punta de Mita is a very beautiful place and we are very happy to know that people are becoming aware of sterilizing their pets.
