Clean and Green Bonus Edition – Get Gardening!

Ready to get your green thumb into gear? Council’s upcoming events are here to support your growing garden. Pick up some free native plants, compost made from your green bin materials and learn all about how to compost and grow your own herbs and vegetables from your own home.

Wheelie Good Compost Giveaway

12 & 25 February, 11 March, 2 April

Kelso Waste Facility, Panania (corner of Horsley and Bransgrove Rd)

It’s your chance to collect 'Wheelie Good® Compost'. It's made especially for you from the material collected from your household green bins. When you use your green bin correctly, we can produce compost even more efficiently.

  • Compost is a limited to four bags per household.
  • Tickets are free but required - to be released at 12pm on January 25.
Native Plants Giveaway

25 – 31 March

Come and grab some free native plants to start (or add to!) your garden. A selection of native trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcover seedlings will be available, all grown from locally-collected seeds.
There is a limit of four plants per household. Limited numbers are available, so get in early to avoid disappointment. Plants can be collected from the following venues, during their opening hours.

Get your plants at:

  • Campsie Library and Knowledge Centre, 14-28 Amy Street, Campsie
  • Chester Hill Library and Knowledge Centre, 12 Chester Hill Road, Chester Hill
  • Greenacre Library and Knowledge Centre, Community Place, Greenacre; and
  • Riverwood Library and Knowledge Centre, 80 Kentucky Road, Riverwood

To help you get the best out of your plants talks will be held at each of the giveaway locations. Topics will include native gardening for beginners, birdscaping your garden, companion planting with natives and creating butterfly gardens.

Garden to Kitchen to Compost Webinars

Known by many as The Veggie Lady, Toni Salter is a horticulturist with a passion to see organic gardening adopted by everyone, encouraging people everywhere to grow organic produce whether it’s in their backyard, community garden, in a disability day centre or aged care facility. She has been teaching community education classes through various organisations and local councils around Sydney for over 25 years.

Composting Made Easy

This is where life starts – the ground! Your plants will only ever be as good as the soil they are grown in, so get a good start for your own health’s sake. Learn what makes up good soil and look at some problems you may encounter when composting at home.
Herbs at Home
Tuesday 7 March 5:30pm-7pm
Have you ever wanted to grow your own vegetables but don’t think you have enough space?  Learn how to grow vegetables in pots with this workshop.  Whether you are living in an apartment or your only have a small courtyard or you simply want to know how to grow plants successfully in pots, then this is for you.  Includes tips on getting the most out of your small garden through vertical planting.
Edible Gardening in Small Spaces
Wednesday 15 March 5:30pm-7pm
Nothing is better than cooking with fresh herbs but too often we waste what we buy from the supermarket. So why not learn how to grow your own herbs at home and avoid the waste, save money and always have fresh herbs at the back door? Learn how to cultivate a variety of herbs in one small space by building a herb spiral or growing them in pots. This workshop allows you to explore some of the many uses of herbs from the garden and shows you how make and taste some herbal teas.
