Enabling Housing for Ethnic Women research highlights innovative solutions to the housing crisis

Housing is a real issue in Aotearoa; even people with full-time work often can’t afford to buy a house. Read the Enabling Housing for Ethnic Women report, one of the community research projects we did last year with Common Ground. The report highlights different initiatives from around the world that could respond to some of the problems in our market.

We are also offering Housing Solutions for Women through a Multicultural Perspective, a workshop exploring the findings in the report, getting input from workshop participants on the many examples and recommendations presented, looking specifically at tackling the current barriers.
Currently, Aotearoa lacks a housing strategy, nor is there any housing programme or organisation, focusing specifically on homeownership for women or ethnic communities. This report aspires to catalyse action to change that.

A key outcome of the workshop is towards creating a set of action steps which will ultimately enable a diversity of housing solutions for women that are affordable, community-led, sustainable, build community wealth, create equity, and that reflect the cultural values of the residents.

We are hosting two of the same workshop to accommodate people’s availability, you need only come to one.
The sessions are open to all who are interested, with particular invitation to housing role players, community organisations, government, women, and ethnic families. Cross-sector collaboration and grass-roots community involvement is key to tackling our housing challenges and creating innovative, dynamic solutions.

Prevention Initiatives and Outcomes

Twelve community groups from across Aotearoa and from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds launched their initiatives to prevent sexual violence. Animations, posters, and social media campaigns are some of the tools developed by the groups, and designed specifically for their communities. They are all part of an initiative developed by Shama working with  Hohou Te Rongo Kahukura to develop a training on best practices to prevent sexual harm. After the training, Shama's prevention lead worker continues supporting the group to complete their projects.
"No means no" is one of the videos about consent recently released by the Aotearoa Latin American Collective (ALACin).
Yasmina Youth Group launched Our Voices that uses social media to discuss healthy relationship and consent among Arab youths.

Shama celebrated 20 years in the Waikato

On the 19 November, Shama celebrated its 20th Anniversary since it became a charitable trust. Since its humble beginnings as conversations among ethnic women in their homes and garages in 2001, Shama has grown into a community organization reputed for its advocacy on behalf of migrant and ethnic women.

The 20th Anniversary celebrations was attended by past and current members of the Shama whānau, the community who we work with and for, and supporters and well-wishers. We were also honoured with the presence of local Kaumatuas and Tangata Whenua representatives, Kirikiriroa Mayor Paula Southgate, Human Rights Commissioner Meng Foon, MPs Melissa Lee and Jan Logie and many Regional and Local City Councillors.

Among the keynote speakers at the event were Professor Priya Kurian, a co-founder and current trustee of Shama, and Kesh Naidoo-Rauf, Hamilton City Councilor. The event was also the occasion for the screening of the documentary film ‘Shama‘, directed by Associate Professor Arezou Zalipour. This was also an opportunity to showcase the artistic talents of our communities. The 13-year old Jazz Vidamo, a Filipino opera singer from Matamata, and choreographer and performers from the Hamilton Chinese Ethnic Song and Dance Group.

Issues of language and culture and the fact that all around you are strangers add to the stress and one can feel extremely lost! Shama Ethnic Women's Trust is an organisation run by ethnic women for ethnic women. It is a vibrant, sustainable and growing centre, which provides culturally appropriate support, advocacy and programmes to be a source of strength and empowerment for ethnic women.
