Democratic legislators in at least three states — New York, Connecticut and Virginia — have proposed barring convicted insurrectionists from holding public office. The Virginia proposal would also prohibit them from law enforcement roles. A 2022 NPR report found 13% of those charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol were current or former members of the military or law enforcement.

2023 will be a critical election year for Madison County. Two School Board seats, two Board of Supervisors seats, Commonwealth's Attorney, Clerk of the Court, Sheriff, Treasurer, and Commissioner of the Revenue will all be on the local ballot in November, along with all 100 House of Delegates seats and all 40 State Senate seats.

"So now, as we head into 2023, all eyes are on Virginia. This year, every seat in our Virginia General Assembly is up for re-election. Virginia Democrats will make clear that our policies are good for people, communities, and our economy, and that our legislators – state and federal – work hard for the neighbors we represent." ~Abigail Spanberger

Annette HydeThe next order of business will be to welcome Annette Hyde as the new chair of the Madison County Democratic Committee. Annette brings a wealth of experience to the position; she will discuss her vision and will set the tone for the remainder of her 2022-2024 term.

During our business meeting, we will discuss instituting annual membership dues in order to help keep us funded, as well as bring you up to date on recent developments in the
Madison school board's decision to remove 21 books from the high school library, including works by Margaret Atwood, Stephen King, Toni Morrison, Anne Rice and more. Looking ahead to November, we'll describe an upcoming work session for anyone interested in running for a seat on the school boards in Madison, Culpeper, and Rappahannock.

Finally, our incredible Democratic candidate for the newly-formed 62nd District of the Virginia House of Delegates,
Sara Ratcliffe
will address the group about her vision for 2023 and circulate a petition for us to sign to get her on November's ballot.

See you Saturday!

Help us send Sara to Richmond!
