Pretty Polyanthus

We have just had in a wonderful array of one of our favourite plants for late winter and spring colour - the delightful Polyanthus. These are a type of Primula (the genus which also includes Primroses, Cowslips and Oxslips) and are characterised by their thick, multi-headed flower stems. We have the beautifully blushing 'Gold Nugget Apricot' and the delicate. Victorian 'Red Lace', amongst many others. All of these mix well with our spring bedding plants, including Anemone 'De Caen', mossy Saxifrage, Bellis daisies and spring bulbs.

Seed spuds!

Calling all potato fans - seed potatoes are in stock now! Some of you will be seasoned experts at potato growing, while others may be considering having a go for the first time. It's easy and fun and you don't even need a veg patch to do it as they are just as easy to grow in containers. Alongside our broad selection of potatoes you will also find jute planter bags and potato patio planters.

What do the different types of potato mean?

'First early': These are planted between late February and April, for harvesting in May to August. These varieties give you the earliest 'new potatoes' and are best eaten as lifted, not stored.

'Second early': Plant these between March and May, and harvest May to August, a few weeks later than the first earlies. These ones give heavier yields and can be stored short term.

'Main crop': Plant these in April or May for a September/October harvest. These varieties should give the heaviest crops and they can be stored for many months.

'Salad': These are any potato variety that is primarily used for salad, having a waxier flesh.
The main task for potato growers right now, aside from choosing and buying your spuds, is to start them 'chitting', which just means encouraging a few initial sprouts. This is easy to do and one of the best tools for this process is the humble egg box. Read our blog to find out more!

Brighten up your winter

Winter doesn't have to be a dull time in the garden. There are plenty of plants that are prized for their contributions to the landscape at this time of year. If you're in need of some inspiration in this area, look this way...

Colourful stems: Some plants are real show-offs when they've dropped their leaves, revealing bare but vibrant stems. Two of our favourites are Cornus 'Baton Rouge' and Cornus 'Midwinter Fire'.

Winter flowers: One of the most popular perennials for winter, the Hellebores, are unfurling their flowers in earnest now. There are also many shrubs that burst into flower during these coldest, darkest months, including Chaenomeles (Japanese Quince) with its delicate blooms of pink, red or white, and the yellow flowered Winter Jasmine. Camellias are also budding up nicely, ready to unfurl in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, varieties of Daphne and Sarcococca add both visual delight and heady scent to the winter garden.

Flashy leaves: Some of the evergreen shrubs really shine now, while many of their neighbouring plants are taking a winter break. For injections of gold tones, look out for Spotted Laurel (Aucuba japonica), Euonymus 'Emerald and Gold', Ligustrum 'Sunshine' and one of our most popular tree heathers, Erica arborea 'Albert's Gold'.

Happy to help.
