AAUW TUESDAY AFTERNOON BOOK CLUB

AAUW Little Rock members are eligible and invited to participate in the Tuesday Afternoon Book Club. The Book Club meets at 12:30 pm on the first Tuesday of the month, October through May. They don't meet in January. Contact Diana Glaze, Book Club President, or Kathryn Buril, hostess, if you would like to attend the February meeting or join the book club. They will meet in Kathryn's home.

The Book Club is a great social time as well as a good way to find out about interesting books before you read them. Debra Tillery hosted the club in December and reviewed the book Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. Kathryn is shown here presenting a book in a previous book club meeting she hosted.

National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) in 2023

For more information about NCCWSL, click here.

Congratulations to Ann Moore, winner of the NCCWSL Raffle of a Christmas dinner for four.  Ann is a member of the Greater Little Rock Federation of Women's Clubs and many other organizations.  She bought a Raffle ticket at a GLRFWC meeting and her ticket was drawn at the December AAUW LR meeting.

Thank you to all who bought raffle tickets. Also appreciation to Maureen Terrafranca & Maria Jones who organized the basket and donated the contents. The raffle raised $990 to send a college student to the conference in May 2023.
AAUW Little Rock's second NCCWSL fundraiser was wrapping gifts at the Barnes and Noble in North Little Rock. Organized and led by Lottie Adams, AAUW Little Rock members wrapped gifts the Monday - Friday before Christmas. Although we did have to miss one day due to inclement weather, Thursday, we were able to provide a needed service to many in North Little Rock and raise awareness of AAUW's mission. We also raised several hundred dollars in tips for NCCWSL.

Volunteer wrappers were Lottie Adams, Maureen Terrafranca, Zenobia Harris, Maria Jones, June Lloyd, Sandy Coffey, Nell Matthews, Nancy Spaulding, Kathryn Buril, Jean Pennucci, Elizabeth Jones, Diana Glaze, Debbie Tillery, and Connie Foster.

Annual Holiday Silent Auction

On December 10th the Branch successfully raised over $1,000 for the National AAUW Greatest Needs Fund. We were happy several guests joined us. We enjoyed a tasty lasagna buffet from Two Sisters Catering and special treats from members, including Maureen's chocolate-dipped pretzels.  The Unitarian Universalist Church's large hall gave us lots of room to eat, visit, browse, and enjoy the donated auction items. Several members who couldn't attend made generous end-of-year donations.  Donations in December were matched by the AAUW National Board.

"Iron Jawed Angels" free screening at the Clinton Center January 26th at 6 p.m.

Message from Kathleen Pate, Chair, Arkansas Women's Suffrage Centennial Commemoration Committee 2018-2020

I'd like to extend a special invitation to the Arkansas affiliate of the American Association of University Women to attend the free screening of "Iron Jawed Angels" on Thursday, January 26th, at 6:00 p.m. This program is a great opportunity to learn more about the suffrage movement, including women who are featured in the Women's Voices, Women's Votes, Women's Rights exhibit at the Clinton Presidential Library & Museum through April 30, 2023.

The historical drama focuses on the work of Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party (NWP) in the early 20th century to secure the right to vote. Known for their radical tactics, the NWP was the first organization to picket in front of the White House.

Page Harrington, former Executive Director of the NWP at the Belmont-Paul Women's Equality National Monument, will introduce the film and set the stage by giving historical context for the overarching suffrage movement. Following the screening, Harrington will provide commentary about the historical accuracy of the characters and events of the film and answer questions.

This program is sponsored in part by the National Archives Foundation.

The program will be held in-person at the Clinton Center. Click here to register.
