Abdulhai to speak at TEDXUofT Conference

event graphic with text details, sponsor logos and photo of Baher AbdulhaiProfessor Baher Abdulhai, Co-director of the Centre for Automated and Transformative Transportation Systems, will speak at Radiance, the 2023 TEDXUofT conference at Isabel Bader Theatre on February 5.

His talk is titled "The Traffic Oxymoron: Slow Down, Arrive Faster."

Description
This talk will show how when we "rush" we end up slowing down. Traffic breaks down at the time we are desperate to move. The solution, you ask? Pace yourself down. Pace traffic into the freeway, everyone will arrive faster. We need intelligent systems to do that though, i.e. control traffic and pace cars onto the road, methodically. And artificial intelligence is there to help.

Our brains are complex, and seamlessly deal with our complex lives with the many physical, social and emotional dimensions. There is a wow factor there.

Traffic is also complex. It is a system of systems that intertwine in a very complex way, with engineering, social, economic and human behavior dimensions. In dealing with such complex systems, we often realize how difficult it is to deal with a tiny subset of the issues.

Can we use AI to pace traffic, eliminate traffic meltdowns, and eliminate fist fights on the freeway! This talk will show us how.
