Random Acts of Breadness is more than sourdough bread and gourmet gifts. It's a community, as the following stories detail...
You've probably seen this guy. The photo of Dave Tourjé and his wife Linda is at the center of our feature wall at the bakery. If you've read the stories on our website, you know that Dave looms large in our legend. It was Dave, the artist, who (along with Linda) loved my home-crafted sourdough bread, who had a heart attack in 2017 while setting up a big art show in Chinatown, who survived and discovered Dr. Gundry's groundbreaking book, The Plant Paradox, who told me about the book, who took one bite of a sourdough pizza I made at his home and said, "Dude, you gotta open a restaurant!" And so the seed was planted.
Dave and I evolved various ideas for food concepts, the first being Ground Zero Gourmet. You can see what that's all about at GroundZeroGourmet.com. Eventually that idea was scaled back to an artisan sourdough bakery / longevity café / legendary bread gift operation. And when the space at 2214 West Magnolia Blvd. became available, there was no room for the longevity café.
That was actually a blessing in disguise as we've had our hands full with just those two components of the concept ever since we opened!
Dave is a mixed media artist, a musician, a super-competent organizer and administrator, and a great person to bounce ideas off of. The above skateboard is one of 5 limited editions featuring original artwork of 5 artists known collectively as California Locos. This board is Dave's art. A very cool video was made for the launch of these boards which you can watch here (set to full screen for max effect). This is one of the best videos I've ever seen. (Let me know what you think...)
Dave gifted me one of these skateboards and it's on the wall at my recording studio for all to admire.
Around Christmas, I thought if would be awesome to give Dave and Linda a true random act of breadness. Dave, being a guitarist, was the right guy to receive this full-size Breadness RockStar Wenge/Maple cutting board, along with a tall bottle of Ojai Olive Oil Company's Tuscan Herbs infusion, Ritrovo Selections Apple Balsamic Vinegar, and Beyond the Olive's Muffuletta condiment. Also part of the gift package was a Breadness Tea Towel and our Eco-friendly Jute Tote. Glad to have Dave come by earlier this week to pick up his Breadness treasures! Rock on, bro...
The Athena Foundation for the Arts
I've known Linda Wehrli for many years. She and her husband Barry teach art and piano at their school, Pastimes for a Lifetime in Valley Glen. Recently, Linda wanted to find a way to present international classical music artists to the Valley, so she formed The Athena Foundation for the Arts and received non-profit corporation status.
Since then, The Athena Foundation has presented several world-class artists in a state-of-the-art venue conveniently located on Burbank Blvd. near Lankershim. Linda has created a Disney-Hall-like vibe with these concerts, which feature the performers with changing visual projections behind them. But unlike Disney Hall, there's plenty of free parking on the venue's property! Click/tap the poster below to see who's performing throughout the year, then purchase tickets using the QR code. We're proud to support the arts in the Valley and have the Athena Concert Series poster displayed in our window at the bakery.
Weather Forecast: More Rain...
It's gonna get wet again so place an order on line for some fresh Breadness and your favorite accoutrements, then cozy up and enjoy our Cinnamon Raisin Maple Pecan sourdough (available and sliceable on Friday) and/or our Traditional Artisan Country Sourdough Loaf.
And if you're feeling extra adventurous, try making a chowder, chili, gumbo or stew to fill one or more of our Breadness Bowls, or use a standard bowl with a toasted sourdough crouton on top. However you choose to create such a meal as this, Breadness will make it even more special!
