Michael Tubbs in Conversation with Tara Roth
In honor of MLK Day, Goldhirsh Foundation and LA2050 President Tara Roth reached out to her friend Michael Tubbs, founder of End Poverty in California (EPIC) and former Mayor of Stockton, to ask a few questions related to the legacy of Dr. King, and Tubbs’ ongoing work with issues such as guaranteed income and ending poverty.

On the connection between guaranteed income and Dr. King, Tubbs shares:
"Absolutely, m
y involvement in this movement is due to the work of Dr. King and his passionate support for guaranteed income as a solution to America’s addiction to poverty in his last book, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?"

JANETTE'S FAVE FIVE
Janette Robinson Flint - Headshot
JANETTE ROBINSON FLINT | Executive Director, Black Women for Wellness

My favorite Los Angeles places and spaces...
PLAY:  Griffith Park is one of my favorite places – Travel Town train rides, merry-go-rounds, and my absolute favorite is the Planetarium. In the past there were deer – not so much now – and the hiking paths are well-worn and friendly.

CREATE:  Los Angeles is super-duper fabulous with free concerts – well we used to be. Grand Performances give you a chance to hear bands and people you might not have heard of outdoors with excellent acoustics. One of my favorites is Flypoet every first Friday, but the special once a year at John Anson Ford Theatre is all that.

CONNECT:  So naturally, I want to share about Black Women for Wellness with our civic engagement and volunteer opportunities. However, when I don’t want to be in charge, have a good time, yet volunteer, it is the Pan African Film Festival. That is my jam – good movies, good people, and still helping spread the culture.

LEARN:  Zócalo Public Square – intriguing topics, great conversation, and interesting people. Zócalo airs a podcast but records at different venues, I have been to Mercado and the Japanese American National Museum so generally speaking a two-for-one: culture and conversation.

LIVE:  Each year there is a Japanese lantern outdoor light festival around the winter holidays, the Los Angeles County Arboretum’s botanical gardens are good spaces to wander around. Also, the Korean spas in Koreatown are world-class – for real. They will absolutely spoil you and set a high bar that spas in other places will have trouble meeting.
