News and Notes

Temporary diversion

Some work needs to be done to the plasterwork of the Cathedral roof at the west end. So when you come in you'll find there's a diversion round that area. Scaffolding will go up shortly and the work is likely to take about a month altogether.

2023 Lent Challenges - ideas!

Do you have an idea for something that could be one of the Cathedral's seven Lent Challenges for 2023? It could be to do with being better stewards of creation, or challenging injustice, promoting peace or paying it forward. Small simple steps to encourage us all to live Lent afresh this year.

Send your ideas to Roxanne (roxanne@saintpaulscathedral.net).

Feel-Good Fridays

Feel Good Fridays are back: 10.00 am to 12 noon every week. Bring your craft activity or board game of choice and join in - tea, coffee & cake and lighthearted chat in a cosy space. And you can see how the Tapestry Stitchers are getting on with the Dundee Tapestry panel, and maybe put in a stitch or two yourself. All welcome!

Visiting Priest from Nablus

Fr Jamil Maher Khader is the Anglican priest in Nablus. Nablus, a Palestinian city on the West Bank, is twinned with Dundee, and there is a twinning arrangement between St Philip's Nablus and St Luke's Dundee. Fr Jamil is making a short visit to Dundee in February. He will be speaking at the 1.00 pm midweek Eucharist in the Cathedral on Thursday 9th February, and after the service there will be a chance to talk to him and his wife Loma.

Memorial Services for Ann Loades

There will be a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Ann Loades on Sunday 23rd April (in the afternoon) in St Salvator's Chapel, St Andrews; and in Durham Cathedral on Friday 9th June at 5.30 pm, during Evensong.

Readings this Sunday: The Third Sunday after Epiphany

Readings this Sunday, 22nd January, are for the Third Sunday after Epiphany: Isaiah 9:1-4, 1 Corinthians 1:10-18, Matthew 4:12-23

"Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven has come near"

I caught a bit of a podcast this week where one of the presenters was speaking about an online support group they were a part of for those who were struggling with addiction.  In the group chat one woman would pop up just about every other day, posting the words "Day one again", meaning that she'd relapsed and was beginning her recovery again. This went on for quite some time - the post would pop up "Day one again", she'd disappear for a few days, and reappear "Day one again"...

The presenter reflected that when they'd been part of such groups before and similar situations they'd seen people who failed or relapsed quickly give up because others in the group would quickly get frustrated with them and judgement and shaming would quickly begin.

But the difference with this group was that where other groups might have judged and shamed, they responded differently. Each time the 'Day one again' post popped up, the group surrounded this woman with love and support, encouraging her to give it another go.  So she kept showing up, kept trying again. And eventually, rooted in this loving, supportive community, the woman was able to make the changes she wanted. And not only did she do that, but she eventually began her own, successful, project to support others to find the same freedom she had.

Listening to this story put me in mind of the biblical call to repentance. Repentance is translated from the Greek word Metanoia which is less about changes of particular behaviours, and is in fact about a total transformation of heart, a turning around, a change of perspective.  It is a call rooted in the unconditional love of God, who knows that we get it wrong but loves us just the same and calls us each day to try again, to shift our perspective

For us, as we respond to that call to Metanoia, every day is 'Day one again'. And if we didn't get it right yesterday then we have the opportunity to try to do it differently today.

Readings next Sunday, 29th January, are for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord: Malachi 3:1-4 Hebrews 2:14-18 Luke 2:22-40

Almighty and eternal God,
behold us in our weakness:
and stretch out your hands to protect us;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, world without end.
