New year, big energy!

As we settle into 2023, we're sensing renewed energy and enthusiasm within our horticulture industry. Maybe that's because we just launched a new report on propagation tray impacts and celebrated Landscape Ontario's 50th anniversary on the absolutely buzzing show floor of the #LOCongress.

Or maybe it's because we just had a super strawberry tour at the International Soft Fruit Conference in the Netherlands.

Or maybe we're just vibing off the 2023 Pantone Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta: "a brave and fearless color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration."

Whatever the reason, we wish you a joyful and successful 2023 season!
- Connie & Rick Bradt, Managing Directors, A.M.A. Horticulture Inc.

Comparing the impact of propagation trays

What happens in propagation doesn’t stay in propagation, according to a new report, The Impact of Propagation Trays on Tree Establishment, which summarizes key findings from a five-year field trial conducted by Vineland Research and Innovation Centre, in partnership with A.M.A.

Researchers propagated black cherry and eastern cottonwood trees in four commonly used trays, including RootSmartTM, then dug them up each year to analyze root systems.

KEY FINDINGS:
  • Defects occurring in propagation were persistent after five years in the field, creating permanent problems that have been linked with tree mortality, including root girdling and root ball development.
  • The RootSmartTM tray consistently produced high-quality root systems compared to the other trays, including better overall root quality and distribution, and a higher number of root-soil contact points.
So the question is, are your trays promoting or preventing healthy root growth? Maybe it's time to make a switch. Learn more about the RootSmartTM tray at www.rootsmart.com and contact Craig Willett if you have questions or are interested in getting started with this solution.

#AlwaysLearnAndGrow

Helpful and interesting horticulture information from around the industry!
Cities are getting 'a little more picky' when it comes to purchasing trees, according to a new article from Fast Company. “You need a tree that’s going to survive the weather of today and the climate of the future," says Pete Smith, urban forestry program manager Arbor Day Foundation. Healthy root systems help trees live out their full life cycle and withstand increasing climate-related challenges, like windthrow.
With 'The art of recycled plastic,' our friends at Desch Plantpak are launching a new creative initiative that elevates the making of products from recycled plastic to an art form. Kees Waqué, Manager of Retail and Marketing, talks about this unique concept, why it's time to look at plastic differently, and how Desch is going to show this art form. Read the article in Hortidaily.
Looking for plant pairings for this year's Pantone Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta? Terra Nova Nurseries in Oregon is offering some suggestions. Check out this list of vibrant plants, including Coreopsis ‘Ruby Frost’ and our favourite, Coleus Wildfire ‘Smoky Rose'. Read the article and see images of the plant pairings in Greenhouse Canada
