Consequences

Deuteronomy 28:15 (NIV®)
However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you.

In Deuteronomy 28, Moses presents the people with two long lists that are often labeled “Blessings for Obedience” and “Curses for Disobedience.” The blessings in verses 1-14 describe nearly unimaginable health, honor, and abundance. Then, verse 15 introduces sixty-seven verses of the exact opposite—hunger, nakedness, disease, poverty, and domination—"curses, confusion, and rebuke in everything you put your hand to until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him” (v. 20). Choosing to follow Jesus opens a pathway toward all of God’s blessings. But it is naïve to think there will not be consequences for your obedience or disobedience. I encourage you to intentionally seek God’s blessings by aligning yourself with God’s ways and His purposes. The difference in the outcomes is actually very stark. Why would you not want to live in the assurance of His blessing?

THINK ABOUT IT
Consider what blessings you’ve experienced from your obedience to God’s character, truth, and Word, then ask the Holy Spirit to show you any behaviors that lead you away from God’s best for your life.

PRAYER
Heavenly Father, I want to honor You and turn away from anything that hinders or diminishes my faith. I choose the pathway toward Your blessings—alignment to Your authority and truth, and obedience in godly behaviors and forgiveness. In Jesus’ name, amen.
