"The 2020 vintage has turned out very well indeed at Domaine Robert Chevillon. With finished alcohols around 13.7% to 13.9%, these are deep and powerful wines that remain nicely balanced, and they're built to age. Indeed, in their vibrant, concentrated style, they remind me somewhat of the domaine's 2016s, something one wouldn't have thought possible on paper. The bad news is that yields were down, the Chevillon brothers having lost the equivalent of one entire harvest over the course of the 2019, 2020 and 2021 vintages. As I've written before, this is one of my favorite addresses in all of Burgundy. Old vines, cultivated soils, moderate yields and long fermentations with entirely destemmed grapes are the order of the day at this address, with the Nuits-Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes seeing some 20% new oak and the premiers crus 30%. Nuits' Tonnellerie Sirugue is the dominant supplier of barrels." - William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

With holdings in eight excellent premier crus, situated from the Vosne boundary in the north to the famous 'Big Three' (Les St Georges, Vaucrains and Cailles) to the south of the town, few, if any domaines represent the essence and the entire compass of Nuits St Georges so well.

Originally founded in 1900 with less than a hectare, domaine Robert Chevillon is now run by sons Bertrand and Denis in succession to their father. Today they farm approximately thirteen hectares, including the top premier cru vineyards in Nuits St. Georges.

They age exceptionally well, and are considered a standard-bearer for the appellation.

These wines will be with us in April.

PURCHASE

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Bousselots 2020
$120 per bottle
93 points Allen Meadows, Burghound:
Here the less expressive nose is not as spicy but actually more complex with its array of poached plum, black raspberry, smoke, earth and underbrush. The delicious, vibrant and beautifully delineated medium-bodied flavors that are shaped by bright acidity on the firm, serious and youthfully austere finish that is even firmer. This is a classic Bousselots that will require extended patience. (Drink starting 2035)

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Chaignots 2020
$120 per bottle
91-93 points Allen Meadows, Burghound:
A vague touch of wood is present on the ripe and exuberantly fresh aromas of poached plum, dark currant and anise. The sleeker and more mineral-driven medium weight flavors possess a lovely sense of underlying tension, all wrapped in a compact, firm and built-to-age finale. This is also excellent and stylistically, it is a mix of Nuits and Vosne. (Drink starting 2032)

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Les Cailles 2020
$165 per bottle
94+ points Johnn Gilman, View From the Cellar: “As I noted in the introduction for the domaine, the 2020 les Cailles is quite black fruity in personality this year, but also marvelously sappy and pure at the same time. The bouquet delivers scents of sweet dark berries, sappy black cherries, dark chocolate, gamebird, a hazelnut, a very complex base of soil, balsam bough and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, deep and full, with a sappy core, great transparency and grip, firm, suave and buried tannins and a long, tangy and nascently complex finish. This will be outstanding juice when it is ready to drink! (Drink between 2035-2090)”

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Les Perrieres 2020
$120 per bottle
93 points John Gilman, View from the Cellar:
The powerful imprint from the warm summer of 2020 is quite apparent in the Chevillon family’s Perrières, as this wine has the broad shoulders and rock solid core in this vintage that one normally associates with the Pruliers or Vaucrains bottlings here! But, there is excellent potential here for the patient, as the superb nose delivers scents of black cherries, black plums, raw cocoa, bonfire, a bit of balsam bough, stony soil tones and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and quite powerfully built, with a sappy core, excellent mineral drive and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, complex and chewy finish. (Drink between 2035-2085)

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Pruliers 2020
$120 per bottle
94 points John Gilman, View from the Cellar:
After tasting the quite powerfully-built 2020 Perrières, I was expecting an even bigger bruiser in the 2020 Pruliers, but this wine is actually quite svelte in personality out of cask and is really a beautiful wine in the making. The excellent aromatic constellation reveals scents of sappy dark berries and black cherries, raw cocoa, spit-roasted venison, a lovely base of dark soil tones, a nice touch of new oak and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with lovely focus and backend mineral drive, ripe, seamless tannins and a very long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. Great juice. (Drink between 2035-2085)

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Roncieres 2020
$135 per bottle
92-94 points Allen Meadows, Burghound:
Pungent aromas of reduction and wood serve as a pungent introduction to the sleek, intense and velvet-textured middle weight flavors that are at once powerful yet refined before terminating in a strikingly long, balanced and complex finale. This youthfully austere effort is terrific and is potentially one of the best examples of this wine Chevillon has ever made. (Drink starting 2035)

Chevillon Nuits St. Georges Les Vaucrains 2020
$175 per bottle
95 points John Gilman, View From the Cellar: “The 2020 les Vaucrains from Domaine Chevillon is another superb wine in the making. It is deep, full and structured, but also quite elegant in profile out of the blocks and will be a stunning wine in due course. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a refined blend of sappy black cherries, cassis, gamebird, dark soil tones, bonfire, balsam bough, nutskin and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full and very soil-driven in personality, with a superb core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins and excellent length and grip on the balanced and very, very promising finish. (Drink between 2036-2100)”
