Dear friends and partners,

We’re off to an exciting, if wet, semester in LAUSD! As California continues to bear the brunt of winter storms, we are using the lessons of the past few years to adapt and keep kids safely learning – rain or shine.

We also continue driving progress in the new year. Nine LAUSD schools just received California's Distinguished Schools award – including five in my district. The District is creating unique progress reports for every student and piloting late buses to expand tutoring access. And we are investing in more professional development to set our educators up for success.

Despite a projected state deficit, we were glad to see K-12 funding stability in the Governor’s proposed budget. This week, LAUSD teachers and students also met with members of the Biden-Harris administration to discuss federal support for mental health programs. We will continue to advocate at every level for the necessary resources to improve outcomes for our kids.

It takes a village – and as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of service this Monday, we are grateful for the support and partnership of our communities.

Onward,

It was great to be back on school campuses as we kicked off the new semester visiting Rosewood ES, Laurel Magnet, and Venice HS! I was also thrilled to join the Friends of Hollywood Central Park at their annual gala, celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the 52nd annual YMCA Brotherhood Breakfast, and tour the innovative Treehouse housing and community spaces.
This Monday, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., I am excited to participate in LA's 38th annual Kingdom Day Parade! Click here for more information on the event details, background, and volunteer opportunities. Hope to see you there!
In the Spotlight: YMCA's Youth Governor of California Hails from BD4!
May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'the AVA CASTRO-DeVARONA Westchester Delegation @avaforyouthgov #cayouthgov'I was thrilled to see one of BD4’s talented student leaders, Ava Castro-DeVarona, speak at the annual YMCA Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Breakfast this week. Ava is a senior at WISH Academy High and the 75th YMCA Youth Governor of California. She has been an active Youth and Government delegate with the Westchester YMCA since 2018, and her advocacy efforts focus on education and mental health. In school, Ava also serves as ASB President, co-captain of the Varsity Volleyball team, and member of the “Link Crew,” a high school transition program to support incoming freshmen. She enjoys reading, listening to music, and going to concerts, and hopes to pursue a career as either an author or professor in the future. Whatever her future holds, we look forward to cheering her on!
