Doheny SB Volunteers and Camp Hosts are the Beat of the Heart - By Vicki, Doheny’s Park Naturalist Interpreter
For anyone who knows me well, knows that I’m all about spreading good energy and positive vibrations. It seems as though the COVID pandemic brought out some negativity but, also some positivity, too. Life is, after all, about balance! For me, it reaffirmed the thought process that so much in life is a metaphor. I really instilled that mindset with my beloved Junior Rangers the last two summers. “No worry, no hurry, just come” philosophy (and etc.).
And so, when I reflect upon my career with the California State Parks, I must confess that I always thought that the varied volunteers who have supported Doheny through the years are the heart, soul, and spirit who flow through the veins of the operation! From the amazing Camp Hosts who hold down the campground to the dedicated docents who staff the Visitor’s Center and support the interpretive program. Most recently, the small but, mighty crew that have helped with the Foundation’s pop-up merchandise booth along the boardwalk for the last two years is beyond expression! I am truly in awe of the time, dedication, and love that our volunteers have given to Doheny during my journey as an interpreter…they have been the “beat of the heart!” Or shall I say, the beat of my heart!
As we embark upon another busy year at our coastal southern California State Park, I would like to say thank you to all of you beautiful and generous people, past and present, who give so tirelessly to make Doheny that special place that people call home…we surely could not do the things that we do without all of you!
